I announce that I am suffering from a lack of time, talk about listener emails, then move on to why I carry a gun, then finally discuss some of the reactions to Arizona’s constitutional carry law.

Criminals acts
Story: Despite a complete handgun ban, car jacking and armed robbery continue in the city of Oak Park Illinois.

Story: A nurse was aiding the victim of an accident when she was carjacked, drug about sixty feet, and suffered a head injury. The driver that caused the accident was arrested for DWI while his victim died.

Story: A four year old girl was injured in a shooting in which the suspect was released from jail in January.

Courts
Story: The United States Supreme Court has struck down a law that was hostile to hunting videos because it conflicted with the First Amendment.

Hunting
Story: Tennessee deer hunters donated enough venison to provide over seven thousand meals to those in need.

Inspirational
Story: A woman who was the victim of a home invasion and sexual assault had a gun at the time, however it was unloaded and locked up. Although her attacker has not been caught she refuses to let him dominate her life through the attack. Not only is she is an inspiration she is also an advocate to getting training for self defense.

Law Enforcement
Story: Law enforcement officers in West Texas have been warned that they may be targeted by Mexican drug gangs in retaliation for their efforts to do their jobs and put and end to the gangs criminal acts north of the border. My local law enforcement officers have been advised to head this warning from the Department of Homeland Security and we are around 250 miles away from the border.

Story: In Mississippi an off duty officer and his passenger exchanged fire with a repeat offender who could not legally possess a firearm due to three felony convictions. The suspect was left in critical condition while the officer received a minor laceration from broken glass and his passenger was unharmed.

Legislation
Story: A bill that would prohibit gun seizures during emergencies has passed both houses of the the Hawaiian legislature and now awaits the governor’s signature.

Military
Story: Once again I want to point out that the NRA is offering free memberships to active duty military personnel as well as national guard and reservists.

Story: Remington has announced their return to the handgun market with the Remington 1911R1 which is due out in June.

Story: For your entertainment I would like to let you see “The point and click interface, redefined”.

Self Defense
Story: An armed citizen who is licensed to carry a concealed handgun prevented a suspected bank robber from escaping. The suspect is a repeat offender who had already served time for a previous bank robbery and police are “Happy to have him off the streets.”

Story: A man defended himself using a firearm when he was attacked and shot by three suspects. He fired at the suspects as they ran away. Two men later sought medical treatment for gun shot wounds at a hospital, one for serious injuries. No charges have been filed yet as police are still investigating the incident.

Story: A teenage burglar who was crawling though the victims windows almost got shot when the victim fired a shot at him. The victim held the suspect until the police arrived and took him into custody.

Story: In Oregon a man licensed to carry a concealed handgun was forced to use his weapon when he was attacked by three aggressive men. The men were drunk and attacked the victim after he drew his weapon. At least one of the suspects was captured and taken into custody.

Story: A man with a concealed carry permit was attacked by three men and managed to fight them off with his hand gun. At least two suspects were taken into custody with gunshot wounds.

Story: A suspected robber was shot and killed while he attempted to rob a man inside an apartment. While being held at gun point one of the victims used their own firearm to shoot the suspect. The victim was licensed to carry their weapon and the suspect was wearing a court ordered monitoring device on his ankle.

Story: After multiple wrecks disabled a vehicle he carjacked a suspect then attempted to carjack a bus with passengers on it. During the attempt to carjack the bus an armed citizen attempted to pull the suspect off the bus driver then struggled with the suspect until his weapon was discharged. At that time the suspect went back to the disabled vehicle he had carjacked earlier, sat down inside, and waited until the police arrived even though the vehicle had a small fire.

Story: Just a Very Quick, and brief, announcement that Jan brewer signed Constitutional carry into law for the state of Arizona.

I knows its seriously late but I have been experimenting again with new software and editing techniques among other things.  The results were two different attempts to record, the second attempt started on Tuesday and ended over 24 hours later with several sessions spliced together.

This week I cover some listener emails, the news, the Taurus PT709 Slim, and militias.  Other than that I should let you know that I may take next week off due to being overwhelmed with other responsibilities, but thats life.

Campus Carry
Story: The fate of the gun ban at the University of Colorado at Boulder could be decided as early as this month when a verdict from the Colorado Appeals court is handed down.

Story: The Students for Concealed Carry on Campus empty holster protest will see a local event in Lubbock Texas at the Texas Tech campus. Currently state law permits License holders to carry onto campus but not into buildings.

Criminals acts
Story: Obey the law, and remember to have good range etiquette. This story explains how poor manners at the range are not only dangerous but potentially illegal.

Story: In Ohio a suspect carried a weapon into a shoe store, fired several shots, and then fled the store. The article says the police have not released a description of the suspect nor have they released if the suspect got away with any money.

Story: Two suspects shot a pizza store clerk during a robbery in Hamilton Ohio. The clerk was air lifted to an area hospital with a gunshot would to the abdomen and a second gun shot would to the hand.

Story: A Washington man has been arrested for making death threats against United States Senator Patty Murray. The article goes on to say that the subject had a valid carry permit and a .38 caliber revolver.

Courts
Story: Montana started the “Firearms Freedom Act” movement where the states are trying to reassert their tenth amendment powers and will now have the help of Utah, Wyoming, and South Dakota in their federal lawsuit.

Facts
Story: In the Commonwealth of Virginia states background checks are taking longer to complete than before. What used to normally take minutes now takes hours to complete. The state police claim the delays are being caused by budget cuts and fewer staff. This brings to mind the saying “A Right Delayed is a Right Denied.”

Story: The largest county in Ohio has 49 deputies, one patrol car, 720 square miles of territory to patrol, and a waiting list for criminals who need to serve jail time. The fact that that when asked what people should do to protect themselves in this situation a Judge responded that residents should arm themselves.

Hunting
Story: Ohio Turkey Season opens on April 19th in all 88 counties. A special youth only two day hunt will be held from April 17th to april 18th. The article has more details.

Story: The Arizona Game and Fish commission supports the right to hunt and fish amendment to the state constitution. When a state agency supports protecting peoples rights you know that you have some good folks running the afore mentioned agency.

Story: The good hunters of Ohio donated nearly double the venison to people in need when compared to last year. This story only goes to prove that there are more hunters who care about those less fortunate than themselves.

Legislation
Story: In Hawaii a bill to ban the seizure of legal firearms during emergencies has been passed by both houses of the state legislature and is now in a conference committee to resolve differences between the two versions.

Open Carry
Story: Open carry is not only legal, but is practiced in Nevada. A 29 year old wireless Internet engineer and a 44 year old truck driver both open carry and serve as second amendment advocates who educate people that open carry is Legal, but they also educate people that most folks with guns are actually good guys.

Story: Its only fitting that while I am reviewing the PT709 Taurus Slim on this episode there is an article about the Slim being available in two new calibers as well.

Self Defense
Story: The Phillipine National Police are considering whether or not to scrap their current carry permits due to the supposed success of a complete, but temporary, gun ban during their elections.

Story: A seventy year old clerk forced a suspects weapon away and then drew his own during a botched robbery attempt that resulted in the arrest and confession of the suspect. The suspect was carrying a starter pistol and fled the scene in a vehicle and was arrested with the help of a 911 caller.

Story: An apartment resident shot a man who had repeatedly broke into the residence looking for a former resident who no longer resides there. The suspect was intoxicated and ignored a warning shot fired by the current resident.

Story: A San Antonio man was stabbed when he confronted a suspected burglar who appeared to be breaking into his pickup. The suspect was arrested and the victim is listed in stable condition. The suspect who was fleeing the scene on foot with a bloody knife was confronted by a Concealed Handgun License holder who was threatened by the suspect. The licensee then revealed their weapon and the suspect dropped the weapon and continued to flee.

Story: A man was forced to shoot and kill a large adult black bear that was attempting to break into his daughters home while she and her four children were home.

Story: An older gentleman was forced to shoot and wound a violent intruder who broke into his residence in Washington State. The suspect attacked and fought with the victim twice, although the second time the victim had retrieved a firearm and used it to defend himself.

Criminals acts
Story: Criminal street gangs are a problem, not only do they exist to commit crimes but they have no issues with intimidating witnesses as this story from New Jersey shows.

Story: In Ohio a store clerk was shot during a robbery. The suspect may be the same individual responsible for at least two other robberies.

Story: In Mexico the drug cartels conducted coordinated attacks on multiple military installations. While the results were pretty much one sided for the military this shows us how brazen the drug cartels have gotten in Mexico and how gun control doesn’t prevent gun violence.

Story: A suspect entered a North Hollywood restaurant and killed four people. Now the news article states police are still looking for the suspect, and implies that more than one suspect may have been involved in the shooting.

Courts
Story: In what is being called Heller II a Federal judge has upheld the District of Columbia’s current gun laws citing what is essentially the minority opinion from the original Heller case.

Story: An Arizona woman was sentenced to serve two and a half years in prison and three years of probation for leading her sons, and their friends, in twenty or more armed robberies.

Facts
Story: Criminals who plan to harm people will always get access to firearms, if you don’t believe this look at Chicago with its current gun laws.

Hunting
Story: Five individuals were arrested in West Virginia in for multiple poaching incidents. Of the five suspects three Adults and two Minors.

Legislation
Story: A bill in Wisconsin would allow retired Law Enforcement Officers to carry concealed firearms under state law. I am not 100% sure how this works with the Federal LEOSA statutes.

Story: The Iowa legislature has passed the carry permit reform bill and it now awaits the governor’s approval to become law. Iowa Listeners need to contact the governor’s office and urge him to sign the bill into law.

Misc.
Story: If you ever wondered what its like for a woman to go to a gun store and find that right gun, then this story is for you. This particular story is about a woman who went through the first shots program then went to buy herself a .22, and she is left handed to boot.

Story: Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, or SCCC, will be holding their empty holster protest During the school week of April fifth through April ninth. Around the country colleges have had different reactions to the group and their protests ranging from indifference to attempts to prohibit the activities all together.

Story: Background checks for the Census will delay FBI fingerprint and background checks for Carry Permits and other civil purposes. This delay and the resulting backlog will be felt nation wide and will effect checks on educators, nurses, Private Security guards, Commercial Drivers license seeking a hazmat endorsement, and others.

Products
Story: The Marlin factory in North Haven Connecticut will be closed and relocated in the future. This does not mean that Marlin firearms will become scarce or unavailable, it just means that a new facility will be producing them.

Self Defense
Story: Shooting Illustrated has a good article on the basics of preparing to deal with a home invasion. Rather than having a loaded firearm in every room of the house I feel you should have a loaded firearm on you unless your sleeping.

Story: A man shot and killed another subject who attacked him at his apartment in Ohio. The attacker was a registered sex offender who was released from prison in 2007.

Story: A hospital security guard, who fatally shot a patient who attacked a doctor, will not be charged according to the district attorney.

Story: An off-duty Chicago police officer shot and wounded a suspected burglar who was breaking into his south side home. A subject later sought medical treatment and police are investigating if this man is the suspect shot by the officer.

Story: Two repeat offenders got more than they expected when they got caught by the victim of their burglary in Georgia. One suspect was shot in the arm and the shoulder while the other was appearently uninjured.

Story: In Hawaii a woman shot and wounded two suspected robbers in defense of her wounded boyfriend who was injured when a suspects firearm discharged. The suspects had entered the home with weapons and zip ties. Police arrested both suspects and their getaway driver shortly after they fled the scene.

Story: Two Bethlehem Pennsylvania suspects are in custody after an exchange of gunfire with a home owner who forced the suspects to flee after returning fire with a handgun.

Story: In Michigan police have concluded that a Pittsfield Township shooting was a case of self defense.

Story: A convicted felon will not be charged for defending himself with a firearm thanks to a home surveillance video which proved he was defending himself.

Story: In Oklahoma a homeowner shot and killed a burglary suspect armed with a sword and a handgun. The victim returned home to find the man in an upstairs bedroom and when discovered the suspect began to advance on the victim who fired one shot. The suspect fell when hit but then attempted to access the handgun forcing the victim to fire an additional two shots that fatally wounded the suspect.

Story: A suspect was shot by an off duty Police Officer after the suspect had hit another off duty officer with his vehicle and appeared to be about to his the other officer again.

UPDATE: I did something during post-processing that distorted the audio.  I am fine tuning things now to avoid this in the future.

This weeks podcast is just me, Yeti is not around for this one, but I have some recording new gear to try out and the sound changes during the podcast as I am experimenting to find the best settings.  I also got in a hurry to get this out the door so I did not edit it as well as I should have.  In the future I hope that I produce a much better sounding podcast since I now have tools that are better suited for the task.

Criminals acts
Story: Criminals in the Philippines are using fake carry permits in order to confuse law enforcement and security. This is having a negative effect on the people who carry legally.

Story: In Ohio A delivery driver was shot by two suspects as he attempted to flee the scene in his vehicle.

Story: An eighty four year old man fired a shot during an argument with his wife who immediately fled the scene. The Houston Texas Police department and S.W.A.T. team responded and proceeded to hold a six hour standoff during which tear gas was fired into the man’s residence. The suspect claims he was asleep for most of the stand off and was unaffected by the tear gas. No one was injured during the original altercation or during the standoff.

Courts
Story: The University of Colorado’s 1994 policy banning firearms may violate state laws. This will be determined though the courts as a case is already before the Colorado Court of Appeals.

Facts

Story: Since Arizona first implemented Concealed Carry, violent crime races have gone down while the number of license holders have gone up. This is despite the predictions of “Blood in the streets” and shoot outs at noon that opponents to concealed carry predicted.

Story: Firearms deaths have fallen while the number of permits to carry have increased, in fact the number of carry permits is currently at record levels.

Hunting
Story: The United States Sportsmen’s Alliance has introduced a new program that is free. This project aims to raise awareness about national, state, and local issues among sportsmen.

Military
Story: The United States Military is currently looking at giving our soldiers a better carbine. They are currently taking two different approaches to achieve this. One approach is to get a new carbine to replace the M4 while the second approach is to upgrade the current M4 so that it is more reliable, rugged, among other improvements.

Legislation
Story: Oklahoma Senate Bill 2257 would expand the state’s so called “Make My Day Law” to include businesses as well as individuals.

Story: Even while the gun banners are trying to make it illegal for us to own firearms, a number of their activists are guilty of owning or carrying such firearms illegally. These activists include Barbara Graham who was a speaker at the million mom march, and Annette “Flirty” Stevens another million mom march activist.

Story: The National Shooting Sports Foundation has launched a Video Podcast they are calling the Shooting Sports Cast. The description of the podcast is “Tips and news on hunting and the shooting sports from the National Shooting Sports Foundation” and it is produced in HD.

Self Defense

Story: A Modesto California store clerk shot and killed an armed robbery suspect. A second suspect who was struggling with a second clerk fled the scene after his friend was shot.

Story: In Ohio more people are applying for, and receiving, carry permits than ever before.

Story: Wildlife is still a threat, even if you live in an urban community. In Florida resident of Elwood Park has shot two bobcats that weighted around thirty pounds.

Story: A Florida Homeowner held a suspect at gun point until deputies arrived and took the man into custody. The homeowner woke up and grabbed his gun as the suspect approached him in his sleep.

Story: In California an eighty five year old man fired a warning shot to scare off a suspected burglar. The home owner will not be charged, however he was urged to call 911 before taking the law into his own hands.

Story: A woman who was home alone fired a weapon in self defense when an intruder kicked in her front door. The suspect rang the door bell several times prior to kicking in the door. It is believed that the woman missed the suspect who fled the scene apparently unharmed.

Story: Kansas House Bill 2685 was passed by the house and now needs support in the state Senate. The bill if passed and signed into law would mandate security measures such as metal detectors at any government facility that prohibits concealed carry.

Story: A man who was shot and then accused of firing on police officers has been released and the charges against him have been dropped. The suspect supposedly shot into a police cruiser however none of the cars that responded to the scene had any bullet damage. The suspect was actually attempting to stop the burglary of his neighbors business.

Story: A man died after following the instructions of armed robbers. Like the victim we often hear police officers, media personalities, and even employers telling us not to resist and do everything the suspect tells us. In this case it cost this victim their life.

Story: A Georgia Woman Shot and injured a burglar who was attempting to break into her home. The victim heard the suspect breaking in, retrieved her weapon and fired at the suspect. The suspect fled the scene but later sought treatment at a hospital.

Story: An armed suspect was shot and killed by his victim who he tried to carjack in New Orleans Ninth Ward. The victim called 911 for the suspect, however the suspect expired before help arrived.

Story: A suspect wielding a kaiser blade while burglarizing a business approached the business owner with the weapon. The business owner retrieved a shotgun and shot the suspect in the leg. The suspect was taken to the hospital and will be charged with grand larceny once he is released from the hospital.

I think it was in June of 2008 I registered this domain with the intention of setting forums dedicated to the carrying of arms.  After a bit of research and thought I decided not to because there were already a lot of forums out there that did the job very well.  So the domain sat there just in case I changed my mind, then over a year later I got an urge to start a podcast about carrying weapons.  So I went and started looking at domain names to use for that, after about a week I though “What about the CarryTalk.com domain”  its already registered AND it fits the topics I want to discuss.  So in August 2009 the CarryTalk Podcast was born.

Now if I setup a forum it will not be just for the podcast, it will instead cover the carrying of arms such as handguns, long guns, knives, ect. what ever reason.  there would be a dedicated sub forum for the podcast but it would neither nominate nor would it overly influence the direction of the forums.  So if you want a forum then please submit your answer in the poll and let me know.  Additionally if you have any comments and/or suggestions for it then please post them in the comments for this post.

Criminals In action
Story: A woman was raped by a man who was wearing what appeared to be a police uniform. The suspect’s uniform had what appeared to be Fort Worth patches on it. It is believed that the suspect in this case is not an actual Law Enforcement Officer.

Self Defense
Story: In two days two criminals were shot during attempted robberies in Toledo Ohio. The first suspect was injured, but is in custody while the second suspect is deceased.

Story: An armed Florida homeowner engaged two suspects, at least one of them was armed, who attempted to rob him in his own driveway. One suspect managed to flee the scene, however one suspect was fatally wounded.

Story: Sometimes all it takes is the mere act of drawing a weapon to stop an attack. In this story a would be robber fled the scene after a licensed civilian drew his weapon when the suspect approached him and demanded money.

Story: An assault victim’s father shot her attacker twice, one of which struck the suspect in the groin. The suspect is the ex-boyfriend of the victim and was choking her when the father intervened.

Story: Three suspects were stopped by a third party armed with a firearm during a car jacking. The suspects then fled the scene and were involved in a high speed pursuit with police that ended with all three suspects being arrested on multiple charges.

Hunting
Story: A fundraiser at a South Dakota gun show raised money to help disabled youth hunters.

Story: The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has given the go ahead for the states first bear hunt in five years. This hunt will help control the population and regulate how aggressive the bears may get due to over population.

Story: Outfitters in north west Wyoming are calling for help in dispersing wolves that are threatening the Elk Herds that they depend on for their business.

Story: New Mexico Military personnel can get a discount on their hunting license under a new state law. Every state should offer similar discounts.

Courts
Story: A Federal judge has ruled that the first amendment rights of students were violated when the college attempted to prevent them from holding an empty holster protest.

Concealed Carry
Story: In Michigan applications for concealed carry are still on the rise. In fact one county had over a 560% increase from 2007 to 2009.

Campus Carry
Story: A Utah Student was detained and harassed over openly carrying a firearm. In Utah open carry is generally illegal on a campus while concealed carry license holders can carry nearly anywhere. As a result there is some question on the subject of a license holder openly carrying on campus.

Military
Story: We would like to take a moment to remind everyone that the NRA is offering free memberships to active duty members of the United States Armed Services.

Business
Story: Illinois gun dealers expect a boost in sales should McDonald win his case that is currently being considered by the United States Supreme Court.

Political
Story: The South Dakota Legislature has rejected a bill that would have allowed employees to store firearms in their vehicle while at work. This legislation would have allowed employees to defend themselves while traveling to and from work.

Story: The governor of Indiana signed into law a bill that will protect the private information of permit holders. Legislation such as this is a response to media efforts to treat gun owners like sex offenders.

Story: The Virginia senate’s “Kill Bill” panel broke senate rules according to Lt. Governor Bill Bolling who also serves as the president of the state senate.

Story: In Minnesota county sheriffs take different approaches to issuing concealed carry permits.

Story: Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear signed House Bill 19 into law which will allow active duty military personnel to renew their concealed carry license early and by mail.

Story: West Virginia has moved to outlaw the tactics used by New York City’s Mayor Bloomberg. The tactics used are of questionable legality as it is, but this legislation would specifically prohibit these practices.

Story: The Colorado legislature will not extend the stand your ground protection to businesses.

Story: An Ohio bill would permit legal concealed carry in restaurants that serve alcohol, the bill would also remove the requirement that firearms be stored while transported in a vehicle.

Story: Shall-Issue Legislation has been re-introduced in the Iowa House of Represenatives. Leadership in both the House and Senate introduced this legislation and would reform how licenses are issued. Additionally it appears that this legislation will be fast tracked through the legislative process.

Story: Constitutional Carry continues to move forward in Arizona and looks to be on track to pass.

Story: Police chiefs in Virginia are calling for the governor to veto the restaurant carry bill that has made it through the legislature.

Story: The city of Belle Meade Tennessee is not looking to ban handguns inside city limits, they are however revising their ordinances to remove an exception for open carry that allows someone to carry “an Army or Navy Pistol that shall be carried openly in the hand.”

Story: The Missouri legislature is considering legislation that would lower the minimum age for a concealed carry license to twenty one, among other reforms. The current minimum age for licensed carry is twenty three.

Story: In Pennsylvania The Penn Hills Police Chief is not bothered by the fact that two local fire departments are raffling off guns to raise money not long after someone fatally shot one of his officers. The chief goes on to state that the suspect who killed his officer did not, and could not, legally own a firearm.

Story: A bill in Illinois would ban the ownership, possession, selling, purchasing, or manufacturing so called “Assault Weapons” and and certain accessories.

Random Shots aka misc.
Story: This one should go in the About time category if we had one. The Utah legislature has approved a state holiday for John Moses Browning. Browning revolutionized the firearms world and his designs continue to influence modern firearms and weapon systems.

Story: An Ohio grand jury no-billed a man who fatally shot an intruder in his home, in fact the second suspect who received a non-fatal gun shot wound will be charged with his accomplice’s death.

Story: The Ohio Supreme court has agreed to hear Cleveland v. State of Ohio in which the city is challenging the constitutionality of statewide preemption.

Story: An Indiana appeals court has ruled that having a concealed carry license does not waive your fourth amendment rights.

Criminals In action
Story: Three people were killed in an apparent home invasion in a Chicago Illinois suburb. I am certain that these criminals would like us to take the time to express their thanks to the city of Chicago for ensuring that the victims were disarmed.

Story: A suspect was arrested in Ohio after robbing two elderly women with a knife.

Self Defense
Story: In the State of Ohio there have been a number of instances where normal citizens who were legally carrying concealed were forced to defend themselves since licensed concealed carry was legalized.

Story: A man who will become a Marine in two months got some experience in handgun combat against an intruder in his home. The homeowner fired two shots at the intruder who fled the scene and has so far managed to elude capture.

Story: A third party shot a man who broke into his ex-girlfriends home. The ex-girlfriend is also the mother of his child.

Story: A man who found himself fighting for his life fired five shots at two suspects during a suspected car-jacking. It is believed the victim hit at least one suspect with .45 caliber glock.

Story: Both a man and his girlfriend exchanged gunfire with a suspect who shot the man and stole his Camaro that he listed for sale on Craigslist. The girlfriend actually pulled up in her car and opened fire on the suspect in an effort to save her boyfriend’s life.

Story: A seventy year old man held a suspect, who broke into his residence, at gun point until police arrived.

Story: In Missouri a homeowner was forced to use his firearm to stop a violent home invader.

Hunting
Story: Michigan may legalize Moose Hunting if legislation that passed the state senate makes it past the state house and is signed by the governor. A moose season would help better control the population and bring in money from out of state hunters.

Story: The “No-Net-Loss” bill heads to the desk of Alabama’s governor after having passed the state house and senate. This bill will ensure that the current amount of public land available to hunters will not diminish.

Story: The hunter privacy bill has passed the Idaho state house. This was, in part, a reaction to a newspaper printing the names of hunters who had received a wolf tag.

Story: New Jersey is a step closer to having a bear hunt for the first time in five years. Naturally animal rights activists are apposed to the plan.

Military
Story: U.S. Army Spec. Tyler C. Imig is doing what he loves, competitive pistols. He is currently ranked number eight in the United States and hopes to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Shooting Team.

Story: A United States Air Force cadet is considered one of the best in the nation and manages to meet his class, military, and community obligations.

Products
Story: We have a blog article that takes on the question “are Glock’s Inherently Unsafe?” While I do not particularly care for the Glock, I do have to say I feel they are perfectly safe when handled properly like any firearm.

Political
Story: A Bill in Louisiana would legalize concealed carry in places of worship such as churches, synagogs, and mosques as long as the appropriate authorities from the place of worship approve.

Story: In Virginia members of the Senate have taken action to kill any pro-gun legislation by creating a special sub-committee to review all gun related legislation.

Story: A Virginia bill that would make it legal for concealed handgun license holders to carry in places that serve alcohol now heads to the governor’s desk to be signed. The bill does not allow license holders to drink while carrying.

Story: Legislation for a proposed pilot program for concealed carry in Illinois has been killed by the “Public Health committee” who voted nine to zero to kill the legislation.

Story: West Virginia is one step closer to a sales tax holiday on the purchase of firearms since the House of Delegates passed House Bill 4521. The legislation must now pass through the Senate and then be signed by the Governor.

Story: The Florida Senate has passed the ban on raiding concealed handgun trust funds. Recently Florida has been raiding trust funds to make up for budget shortfalls, last year the governor vetoed one such raid on the concealed handgun trust fund.

Story: In Virginia a bill that would have repealed the one gun a month law was killed by the new sub-committee that was setup for situations just like this.

Story: The Oklahoma house has passed legislation to protect Oklahoma made firearms from federal interference as long as the firearms are sold and kept in the state.

Story: The Idaho house has passed firearms freedoms legislation like many other states in the battle over the tenth amendment and the Interstate Commerce clause.

Story: A number of pro-gun bills are on the move in Arizona including the Right to Hunt Constitutional Amendment and HB2543 which would help reform state wide preemption.

Story: Restaurant carry is progressing in Tennessee as it moves to be considered by the house judiciary committee.

Story: Legislators in the Oklahoma house have killed the open carry bill using legislative procedures.

Story: The City of Emeryville California seeks to ban gun stores inside city limits.

Story: Governor Richardson signed the restaurant carry bill which received bipartisan support in both houses of the state legislature.

Story: A California law maker wants to outlaw open carry. California Listeners should contact their assembly members and express their concerns regarding this, and similar, legislation.

Random Shots aka misc.
Story: More women are arming themselves, and attending gun shows, according to a story from Pennsylvania. The last time I went to a gun show I noticed that there were more women present there as well, but then again I am in west Texas so its not that unusual.

This week I invited a guest co-host on the show who instead of bringing the level of intelligence up, as I had hoped, killed it in the most painful manner he could think of.  He wants to go by “Yeti”, and even brought along his “Crazy Ivan” Personality.  Thats the bad good news, the bad news is that he plans to come back next week.  So next week I will get him to tell us a little about himself and why he sounds a little like an anti.

Story: A CSU Student putting his education to work researched crime rates since CSU legalized campus carry and discovered that crime has dropped since late 2003 when the campus legalized carry.

Story: The Board of Governors for CSU voted unanimously to ban legal concealed carry on campus.

Story: Two students where shot by a man at a high school in Colorado by a man who was tackled by a teacher. Now the teacher saved the lives of these students even though he lacked tools that would have made his efforts easier and quicker.

Criminals In action
Story: A man in Tampa Florida who is accused of killing one woman and injuring two others is the brother of the man who was hired by a NFL wide receiver to kill the mother of the player’s unborn child.

Story: A female robber pointed a firearm at a teller who is six months pregnant and demanded money. After four robberies in a little more than a year the bank has now decided to hire an armed guard.

Self Defense
Story: A New Mexico Home owner shot a suspected home invader at her residence in Albuquerque. The suspect may not have been acting alone according to reports.

Story: A homeowner returned fire at an intruder who broke into his house and shot his dog. The suspect appears to have escaped unharmed and police are still searching for him.

Story: A homeowner was forced to defend himself with deadly force to defend himself and his property when he confronted burglars at his residences.

Hunting
Story: A bill in Idaho would exempt some information regarding hunting licenses from being made available to the public in order to protect hunters.

Story: A South Dakota Legislative committee has rejected legislation that would have made public some information regarding who have a hunting license.

Story: Interest in Coyote hunting is increasing in Pennsylvania. To some Coyotes are a nuisance while to others they are a smart and challenging prey.

Story: In Alabama legislation has passed the state house of Representatives that would ensure that there is no net loss of public hunting lands in the state.

Story: Wisconsin is considering legislation that would allow hunters to transport their firearms in their vehicle uncased, the weapons would still have to be unloaded but this would make things more convenient for hunters.

Military
Story: A marine was shot in the head by a sniper in Afghanistan and walked away with a smile on his face thanks to his helmet.

Story: The NRA is offering free memberships to active duty military personnel. So if you are in the military and not a member of the NRA then take advantage of this free offer.

Products
Story: Springfield Armory is starting to ship the .40 caliber version of its 3.8 inch barrreled Xdm. I would like to point out the contents of the link are subject to change.

Story: Cavalry Arms, the manufacturer of the polymer AR-15 lower receiver, is leaving the business of manufacturing firearms. They will will instead concentrate on developing and manufacturing firearm accessories. They are currently negotiating the sale of their Cav-15 production line and the agreement will require the buyer to handle the service and support of their existing products.

Story: Shawn Nealon, and Cavalry Arms, both pleaded guilty to illegally selling a firearm to an out of state resident in Federal court. Now, after all this time, we finally know what triggered the raid on cavalry and why they are leaving the manufacturing business.

Political
Story: Mississippi law makers are making life more unpleasant for those who appose the right to keep and bear arms with state senate bill 2153. While this bill expands the locations where licensed owners can legally carry the article tries to muddy the waters by making it appear that it will let more people carry.

Story: Two weeks ago i talked about the effort in New Mexico to expand where license holders can legally carry, as of last week I can say that the bill has passed its first the house vote and the senate has passed a similar bill once both houses of the state legislature agree on one bill it will be sent to the governor who will hopefully sign it into law.

Story: In Australia Minster Rob Johnson is seeking to seeks to change the firearm licensing system. The new process is doing more harm than good and is strangling the Australian firearms industry.

Story:  The shooting of two teenagers at a church service in California is a good example of why we need to legalize church carry in all fifty states.

Story: In Maryland a bill that would recognize permits from Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Virginia is need of support. Listeners in Maryland should contact their legislators and tell them to support this bill.

Story: Atlanta Georgia has requested the state grant them the authority to decide where guns may be sold. This has come about due to a pawn shop planning to open and sell firearms near a high school.

Story: Legislation would require government approval before you could buy or rent a firearm in Maryland if Delegate Samuel I. Rosenberg gets his way. Essentially the legislation would add additional licensing which second amendment supporters would have to use in order to conduct any number of routine activities.

Story: Due to overwhelming opposition to the legislation the sponsor of Marylands Senate Bill 516 has withdrawn the proposed legislation signaling a victory for gun rights. This bill called for a ban on so called “Assault Weapons.”

Story: The Constitutional Carry bill in Wyoming has passed the state house and now moves on to the state senate. This bill would legalize unlicensed concealed carry in the state if they can prove they are familiar with firearms.

Random Shots
Story: A competitive shooter in Colorado who had a mural painted on his business may be forced to have it changed due to pressure from the community.

Story: Background checks in January are still up, and managed to top checks for january 2008 by nearly 19 percent according to the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

Story: God, Guns, and Guts Made America, and these people plan to keep all three. Vickie and Eddie Jordan who opened the Second Amen-ment gun store in Smithfield North Carolina are religious, infact Eddie is an evangelist and pastor of Faith Baptist Church in Selma.

Story: I love stories about tax free holidays for firearms like this story about the Mississippi Gun Sales Tax Holiday. Now if only Texas would get on the ball and do something like this.

Story: In Texas Judy Rhodes founded the womens only shooting club called DIVAs which is busting stereotypes about women in the shooting sports industry. The more women we have shooting, the better.

Story: Two customers who were open carrying delayed a robbery long enough for the police to notice and arrest the suspects while they were waiting for the armed customers to leave.

Story: Gun sales are up in the Waldo area of Kansas City Missouri since a serial rapist has started targeting the area.

Campus Crime
Story: A woman was grabbed by a male suspect while she was showering in her dorm at Miami University. The victim did receive some minor injuries from the attack.

Story: Two women were shot at by a coworker while on campus at a Tennessee Elementary school. Both women were injured and the suspect was captured.

Story: I know everyone is aware of this issue already, but I got enough email about it I felt a need to cover the story. The shooting which happened on a friday at an Alabama University which claimed the lives of three victims and resulted in three additional victims being injured. It appears that the suspect may have shot and killed her own brother in 1986.

Self Defense

Story: In Arizona the Buckeye PD is reporting that a man shot an attacker as four men were beating him. Witnesses reported that three suspects fled on foot while the fourth, who was wounded fled in a vehicle. As of the time the article was written none of the suspects had been apprehended.

Story: A woman fired a shot at a burglar in her house forcing the suspect to flee. There are no indications that the suspect was injured, more importantly the resident of the property was uninjured as well.

Story: A homeowner in Melbourne Florida shot an intruder in his home causing an injury to the suspects neck. The homeowner was unharmed and the suspect was taken to the hospital.

Hunting
Story: While this story is not about hunting it does impact it. Essentially you should never feed wildlife, however you can help improve their habitat to help ensure their survival.

Story: A recent survey conducted at HunterSurvey.com indicates that a significant amount of hunters have mentored young people in the sport of game hunting. This is good news that indicates that hunting will continue to be a part of American Culture.

Story: Along with the increase in gun sales there has been an increase in hunting license sales in the twelve states that make up the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s Hunting License Index. Should this increase reflect a similar increase in all fifty states this would be one of the largest increases in hunting license sales in over 20 years.

Story: Hunters in Minnesota are pushing for tougher penalties for poachers. What can I say, people who violate the laws and regulations for hunting need to be stopped before they damage not only conservation efforts and the environment but before they ruin the reputation of legal hunters.

Story: Montana’s Fish, Wildlife, and Parks commission has shot down the effort to ban lead ammunition when hunting some species on state owned lands.

Political
Story: Gun laws in Georgia could get a much needed overhaul, including the legalization of campus carry should proposed legislation be passed and signed. Listeners in Georgia need to take action and contact their elected officials and get them on the ball for this one.

Story: This story talks about, among other things, a headline that read “Firearms restrictions part of securing the homeland.”

Story: We have an article where the author proudly says that they do not like gun violence anymore than Starbucks does. If you are unsure, this article supports Starbucks decision to resist the Brady Campaign’s efforts to force it to ban legal carry in their establishments.

Story: A bill that will let Utah join the battle over “States Rights” with the federal government has easily passed a key milestone in the state house of representatives. This bill would exempt Utah made firearms from federal regulations as long as they are sold and kept in the state.

Story: Mike DeWine, a Republican, has announced his intentions to run for the position of Attorney General for the State of Ohio. This would normally be non-news but Ohio residents need to take steps to ensure that he does not get the post as he has proven himself to be a friend to gun banners.

Story: There is currently talk about installing metal detectors and even banning firearms inside the Texas state Capitol Building. This discussion has come about due to a man shooting into the air outside the building on its steps. I really hope those trying to set the policy understand that the policy they want to install would have done nothing to prevent the shooting they are trying to use as justification for their actions.

Story: An Indiana Senate committee has endorsed a House bill that would provide legal protection to people who wish to leave a firearm in their vehicle while at work. This bill would not permit people to carry at work, but it would help ensure that they would be able to protect themselves while they travel to and from work.

Story: With Legal national park carry nearly here the Maine legislature is considering a ban on carry in national parks inside their state. Maine residents need to contact their elected officials and have this bill killed.

Story: New Mexico listeners need to contact their state senators and tell them to support Senate Bill 40 and Senate Bill 212. The first would eliminate some restrictions on carrying where alcohol is served for on premises consumption and the second would eliminate the two year refresher course.

Story: The Alaska Firearms Freedom act, which is one of those efforts to battle the federal governments encroachment into state matters needs your help. This bill would protect Alaska made firearms from federal regulation as long as the firearm is sold and kept in Alaska.

Story: In Virginia lawmakers have green lighted some pro-gun bills that would expand the right to keep and bear arms. Virginia residents need to stay up to date on these issues.

Story: In West Virginia there is an effort underway to make it a felony for non-residents to attempt to buy firearms in violation of state and federal laws. The proposed legislation is a response to actions by mayor Bloomberg of New York City.

Story: Listeners in Alabama need to contact their representatives and tell them to support House Bill 2 which would remove state level restrictions on short barreled rifles and shotguns.

Courts
Story: A three judge panel from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that the second amendment does not extend its protections to protect convicted felons.

Story: The Seattle ban on firearms in parks has been struck down due to the fact it violated the state’s preemption law. According to the ruling the city must stop enforcing the ban by Febuary 17 and take down the signs within thirty days. An appeal by the city is also possible at this time.

Random Shots aka misc.
Story: A Gun show in Albany Georgia raised money for a local charity. The gun show attracted thousands of people ranging from buyers and sellers to Those who support and those who appose the right to keep and bear arms.

Story: A detective with the East Palo Alto Police Department is currently taking heat for comments made on his facebook page. The comments made basically said he would shoot anyone he saw open carrying a firearm. Officers like this do not need disciplinary action, instead they need a trial and prison sentence.

Story: South Dakota wants to invite manufacturers in the firearms industry to the state and has let it be known that they have a number of incentives to help lure them into the state.

Story: Last week I mentioned the effort by the NRA to protect the rights of citizens living in public housing, and that I thought it had already been resolved.  Here’s that article.

Story: The BATFE setup a sting operation that functioned as a resale business called “Tony Tones All Thangs Fine.” After the business opened word spread quickly that they were willing to buy anything including firearms, stolen property, and narcotics. They even allowed the so called customers make private deals in the back room. The shop closed after five months of business. Law enforcement then proceeded to make arrests of 18 people facing Federal charges and ten people facing state charges. I find the initials of the business to be a rather ironic warning to the criminals.

This weeks show was a pain to get out the door.  Several days worth of work was finished, and lost twice.  I did manage to use an older copy of my scratch notes to finally finish the show.  I finally gave in and added some music to the show.

This week’s CarryTip is: Know your weaknesses so that you can improve them and work around them.

Criminals In action
Story: In the city of Juarez Mexico thirteen high school and college students were shot and killed as part of an ongoing turf war between between powerful drug cartels. These students were among twenty four victims in related violence across Mexico.

Story: A teen girl in Ohio was attacked and beaten in a robbery where the thieves stole her iPod. According to the story she was attacked from behind by four male suspects. A passerby came to her assistance which caused her attackers flee the scene.

Self Defense
Story: Three men were arrested after trying to burglarize the home of a man armed with a shotgun. Two burglars were arrested in the vehicle while a third who fled the scene on foot was arrested by a state trooper at a different location.

Hunting
Story: A hunter was injured when his black Labrador retriever stepped on his shotgun. The animal managed to disengage the safety and operate the trigger. The hunter received non life threatening injuries from #2 shot while he was retrieving his decoys.

Story: The Tennessee state senate has approved an amendment to the state constitution that would help protect hunting rights. Should the state house approve this amendment it will go on the ballot in November. If you are in Tennessee you need to contact your state representative and urge them to vote for this, you should also contact your state senator and thank them for voting for it or not apposing it.

Story: The good people in Arizona have potential to see an amendment to their state constitution similar to the one mentioned for Tennessee if a concurrent resolution proposed by Jerry Weiers is supported by the legislature. The proposed amendment would make hunting and fishing a legal right in Arizona.

Political
Story: David Cameron who is the leader of the conservative party in England has made a statement that criminals leave their human rights at the door when they break into a property. It looks like the people over there are starting to wake up.

Story: In India Gun owners are fighting the good fight to stop gun banners from further infringing on their rights. During the Mumbai terrorists attacks many citizens sat at home and felt defenseless. India has an estimated four to five million legal gun owners who have the a little bit more security than their unarmed countrymen.

Story: A new battle is brewing between the states and the federal government and the battleground of choice is firearms. The battle is being waged over the constitutions commerce clause and the tenth amendment. Many states have considered or passed a “Firearms Freedom act” or similar legislation that would exempt firearms made, sold, and kept in one state from federal regulations.

Story: This blog post about an insurance company more than demonstrates why gun owners are afraid of socialized health care being used to ban firearms. When you combine the facts that insurance would be mandatory, highly regulated, and/or government owned with the facts in this article you can’t help but understand why gun owners are worried. The title of the article has some minor language but it is still an important topic.

Story: A New Jersey man is fighting his state government to get the right to purchase more than one handgun in a thirty day period. A recently amended law has a provision to exempt people who are gun collectors, shooting competitors, and those inheriting firearms The law would allow them to acquire multiple firearms on a single permit. The state police on the other hand are refusing to follow the law and refused to let the plaintiff in this case add two handguns to his collection in a thirty day period.

Story: In Connecticut a number of cities will no longer ask for letters of reference for firearms permits as it has been determine that state law does not require them.

Story: In Utah a bill that might prevent many self defense shootings has passed a key hurdle. This bill would allow someone carrying a weapon may reveal or mention the weapon to prevent a situation from escalating.

Story: Georgia residents really need to get on top of this one and help ensure that the state senate bill 342 gets passed. This particular bill would protect gun rights during an emergency.

Story: Proposed legislation in Arizona would eliminate the need for a license to carry a concealed handgun in the state of Arizona, and yes the media is already crying blood in the street. I guess these people have never been to Vermont or Alaska.

Story: Castle Doctrine may be coming to Maryland if Senate Bills 386 and 411 are passed into law. If you live in Maryland you need to contact your state senator and press them to ensure this legislation passes.

Story: The NRA is prepared to take action in support of people in Delaware’s public housing. Currently thousands of people who live in some of the state’s most dangerous neighborhoods are prohibited from owning firearms that could be used to defend themselves if they do not wish to be homeless.  Update: I believe this situation has been resolved.

Story: The people of Wisconsin may get support of two important law enforcement officials for licensed concealed carry if the bill contains some anti-gun measures as well. The anti-gun measures the officers want is an end to private sales and to make it a felony to purchase a firearm for someone who is legally prohibited from purchasing a firearm.

Story: The state of Maryland is considering Senate Bill 516 which is essentially a state level ban on some so called “Assault Weapons.” Maryland residents need to take action on this one and call their senators to ensure this bill dies.

Story: Truckers are being robbed and hijacked more frequently. While the article does not talk about armed attacks on truckers it is only a matter of time.

Story: You are probably safe if you are in Vermont where gun laws are so relaxed that the Brady Campaign has given the state a grade of “F” on its report card. In fact Vermont is has one of the lowest crime rates in the nation. Once again the claim that more guns means more crime is proven false.

Story: People who own firearms in Cuba may, for two months, register and keep unlicensed firearms if they meet the standards the government has already put in place. I am thinking this may be the start of another effort identical to what the Cuban government did shortly after Fidel Castro took power and used the registration list to go door to door and encourage owners to turn over their firearms.

Story: More women are getting their license to carry, as this story from Oklahoma illustrates.

Story: We have an article that claims people move faster when reacting apposed to when they are initiating the action.

Story: Even the media is reporting that the gun ban that is being drafted for Colorado State University may make students unsafe. The online poll for the article shows 90% of the respondents are against the gun ban as well.

Story: A man was arrested at a Cincinnati college for bringing weapons and making threats while on campus. His weapons were not firearms, but were deadly anyway. So the criminals and the crazies can bring their weapons but the law abiding can not.

Criminals In action:
Story: The Fifth Third Bank inside the Kroger Story in the Brentwood plaza was robbed. I don’t know if the banks name is Fifth Third bank or if its the fifth bank in the third bank chain to be robbed.

Story: A man who was arrested in New Jersey had been on the run from naval investigators for eight years. The suspect was wearing a bullet proof vest and was carrying a rifle customized to fire an unspecified fifty caliber cartridge. The suspect also had a significant amount of ammunition, additional weapons, a night vision scope, a grenade launcher, maps of an out of state community, and maps of a military base in his hotel room.

Story: A robber with a sawed off shotgun robbed a convenience store in Cincinnati. The suspect forced the clerk to turn off the surveillance system prior to taking $100 from the business.

Self Defense:
Story: This story was posted to a 1911 forum by the victim of the crime, he used his weapon in self defense after having been shot in the hands and shoulder. He and the suspect both managed to survive the incident and police were able to later capture the suspect. I would suggest that you visit the link and read the story for your self, one important note is that there are links to pictures of his injuries in the second post of the thread so please do not click on them if you can not stand to see blood and gore.

Story: A home invader was stopped when his victim fired a shotgun in self defense. The suspect did not survive the encounter while the homeowner declined medical assistance.

Story: A seventy seven year old man defended himself from two men who broke into his apartment while he was present in it. He shot one man because he was afraid they were going to shoot him.

Hunting:
Story: This story from American Hunter gives us a look at Jay C. Bruce who overcame a disability with his left hand to become one of the greatest, if not the greatest mountain lion hunters ever. In 1919 he was appointed the state’s official Lion Hunter which gave him a salary of $25 per weak and was allowed to keep the bounties from his kills as well.

Story: Hunters in Connecticut were among the safest in the United States this past dear season with their second consecutive year without a firearm related injury.

Products:
Story: Charles Daly has modified their website and has apparently gone out of business. This was rather sudden and unexpected for the consumers while it according to the website this is the result of events over the last five years.

Political:
Story: In Indiana we have two progun bills that this article says are bad. First off House Bill 1068 would seal records regarding who is licensed to carry. This is a Public Safety Issue as Permit holders who have moved to avoid a stalker, ex-spouse, or other deranged individual could be found and be attacked. Additionally criminals could access this information to find houses where they know there is a better chance of finding weapons to steal or houses to avoid when they do home invasions.

Story: A bill that would eliminate much of Virginia’s preemption is working its way through the legislature. In essence this bill would permit local governing bodies to pass ordinances banning firearms on property owned or leased by them for governmental use.

Story: State Senator Al White has pretty much single handedly killed the gun tax provision in Colorado. I doubt such a tax could pass constitutional muster but that would take time and money to defeat.

Story: If you are in Northern Georgia and want to participate in the Tax Day and Second Amendment rally in DC all you need to do is make plans and read this article as there are plans to bus people to the event from the area.

Story: The proposed ban on so called “Assault Weapons” is likely to fail according to this article. Now this doesn’t mean that Washington residents can stop fighting it because if we quit the anti-gun rights folks may go ahead and attempt their ban. 

Story: In Indiana a bill to allow employees to keep firearms in their vehicles while at work has passed the state senate. The bill does exempt some locations such as schools, correctional facilities, private residences, and a few others.

Story: In New Hampshire a bill to repeal the gun ban at the state house has passed its first test and has now been filed by state Representative Gene Chandler.

Story: There is now an effort in place to ban firearms all together in the Philippines. As far I am concerned the temporary ban for their election period was a bad idea itself, and I honestly thought it would lead down this road when I first read the article.

Story: This story about illicit drug makers using areas that hunters and others who enjoy being outdoors with nature may frequent to grow marijuana and dump chemicals from meth labs shows the need for concealed carry while outdoors.

Story: The Kentucky state house has passed legislation that would protect military personnel’s concealed carry license. The bill, if it passes the senate and is signed by the governor would allow military personnel to renew their concealed carry license early and by mail if they are on active duty. I personally think all states should have such legislation. The bill also allows active duty personel who’s license has expired while they are deployed to renew their license within 90 days after their deployment ends without penalties or fees.

Story: Proposed legislation in Vermont could ban the possession and sale of all ammunition in the state. If you are in Vermont you need to contact your state legislators and demand they appose H 484.

Story: Governor Bill Richardson of New Mexico has ensured that an issue that would remove the requirement for a two year refresher course for concealed handgun license holders would be placed on the agenda for the 30 day legislative session.

Judicial:
Story: Tom Palmer, who was one of the original Litigants in what went to the Supreme Court as the Heller Case is part of a new lawsuit that is seeking to overturn DC’s ban on the carry of firearms. Alan Gura is arguing this case as well.

Story: The supreme court has granted the NRA divided time so that they too can make an argument before the court in regards to incorporation in the McDonald case.

Random Shots aka misc.:
Story: Another Washington Wizards player has pleaded guilty to violating gun laws. If Washington would get itself in gear and legalize carry and scrap their gun registry then this would not be an issue.

Story: The number of permits in Ohio is going through the roof, in some counties the numbers are up nearly 500%. This will hopefully make criminals decide a career change in is order. An interesting note from the article is that a large percentage of the new permit holders are single mothers.

Criminals In action:
Story: A man impersonating a police officer was busted by a detective impersonating a prostitute. The arrest team that was supporting the detective arrested the subject and then discovered he had not only the Detroit police badge he had flashed but he also but a handgun as well as clothing and caps with Detroit PD logos.

Story: In Hamilton Ohio a suspect was arrested after two failed robbery attempts in one night. The public was able to tip off officers to the suspects identity thanks to surveillance camera footage.

Story: A story bound to have the anti-gun rights crowd dancing in the blood of the victims comes to us from Virginia. In this story the suspect killed eight people including three teens and a four year old. The suspect also forced a police helicopter down after shooting at it and causing a fuel leak.

Story: In Ohio a group of teens are wanted for three violent robberies. In at least one case the subjects had a handgun.

Story: Hamilton Ohio police are currently looking into a string of violent street robberies. The suspects appear to travel in groups and tend to be armed.

Story: A teacher in Alabama was shot and killed after school let out in front of students as they were leaving. The teacher’s husband appears to be the culprit in this case.

Story: In Austin Texas shots were fired on the steps of the state capital building. The suspect appears to have fired into the air and was quickly subdued before anyone was injured. The suspect is from the Houston area and apparently drove to Austin for just this incident.

Self Defense:
Story: A Beaumont Texas man shot and wounded two teenage home invaders while apparently protecting his family. The suspects were taken to the hospital for treatment while the victim of the crime was taken to the police station for questioning.

Hunting:
Story: The Arizona Game and Fish Department would like to let outdoorsmen know that they should be prepared for major winter storms when they are out hunting.

Products:
Story: It originally started out as a concept developed by Magpul and was called the Masada, then it was bought by Bushmaster, later it started to look like it was going to be a Remington product, but now Bushmaster has announced a specific date when their “ACR” will be available. That date is March 1, 2010.

Story: Smith and Wesson has announced their new “BodyGuard” semi-auto pistol. The BodyGuard 380 Pistol. The gun is slightly larger and heavier than the Ruger LCP that it will most likely be compared to. The article also leads me to think that this weapon will come equipped with a laser aiming device from the factory. I am looking forward to seeing images of this gun so I can decide to add it to my “I want” list.

Political:
Story: A suspect in Virginia died after officers used a Taser to subdue him. The suspect was accused of shoplifting. When the officer approached him, the suspect became combative and aggressive. After the subject became hostile the officer used his Taser. The subject was then taken into custody, at that time officers noted he was having problems and called for medical help. The subject did not survive and the cause of death is unknown at this time. 

Story: An article over at the Daily Kos shows why gun ownership should be a protected right for all people, regardless of skin color or other factors.

Story: The proposed ban of so called “Assault Weapons” that is being proposed in Washington has a number of insane things that would ensure a loss of Second Amendment rights for Washington residents. Anyone in Washington should make an effort to help kill this bill before it gets anywhere.

Story: Virginians need to defeat senate bill 595 and ensure that Senator Lucas is looking for work in the next election.

Courts:
Story: We have another article about the McDonald case and how it could change gun laws for cities.

Story: The Association of New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Clubs has filed a lawsuit to invalidate the gun rationing law that limits residents to one gun purchase per month. The link goes to a PDF version of their complaint.

Random Shots aka misc:
Story: Daniel Petry’s opinion piece titled “We Must Protect Americans’ Right to Bear Arms“ is a must read for anyone who is involved in the debate surrounding the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

Story: The Brady campaign and the NRA finally have found some common ground. They both gave President Barack Obama an “F” rating on gun issues.

Story: The Federal Government is working hard to end corruption and bribery practices, well maybe not towards themselves but at least in the firearms industry. Federal agents made twenty one arrests at the biggest show they could, the Shot Show in Las Vegas.

Story: A listener pointed a story out that I had not seen, how I missed it I do not know. A security guard lost control of his vehicle when his hands free cell phone device startled him. He then drove off the road and into a creek. He was able to free himself by shooting out the glass and then was able to swim to safety. I am willing to bet he now has some hearing problems, I have fired a gun from inside a vehicle and have always used hearing protection and my ears still bothered me. I can’t imagine doing it with the windows up, under water, and no hearing protection.

Follow Up:
Story: The California Teen who was expelled because he had shotguns in his pickup while it was off campus got some good news. The expulsion has been reversed and has been expunged from his record.

Criminals In action
Story: In California a man has been accused of raping a woman he met at a bus stop. Interestingly enough the hospital spokeswoman stated that they do have security on duty at all times which only goes to show that security can not always prevent a crime.

Story: In Oklahoma City when a homeowner told an unknown subject who was trying to break into the home that he was on the phone with police the subject then stated he was the police and fired a shot through the door. The real police were able to recover the bullet from the home and the homeowner who was also armed was not forced to use his weapon as the subject fled prior to the police arriving.

Story: From Virginia we have a story where two suspects were arrested last week in the case of a shooting in a mobile home that left the resident of the home struggling to survive injuries she received from her armed attackers. The suspects ages twenty six and nineteen will both be charged with firearms violations as they were both involved in the crime.

Story: In Timberlake Virginia a man claiming to have a gun walked into a CVS pharmacy and demanded drugs. It is debatable if the man was armed or not, but he did manage to leave with the drugs he demanded.

Self Defense
Story: An eleven year old Texas Boy returned fire at home invaders with a .22 rifle after having been shot in the left hip. A suspect turned up at the hospital with a gunshot wound to the neck and was taken into custody. Additionally two Mexican nationals were taken into custody by the border patrol and are being questioned about the incident.

Story: A Texas man shot and killed a teenaged burglar who he caught stealing his property. His case will most likely be referred to the grand jury who will determine if the home owner will be tried. The teen suspect’s girlfriend was also arrested when she showed up as she is suspected of being the getaway driver.

Story: A clerk at a neighborhood market fired a shot at a would be robber who then fled the scene in Merced California.

Products
Story: Sig Sauer has announced new additions to their P229 and P226 lines of handguns. The new E² variants introduce a number of new features and improvements over the older models. Changes include a one piece modular grip, Short Reset Trigger, and the trigger reach has been reduced as well. A redesigned decocking lever can be combined with an optional slide catch lever to reduce the firearm’s profile and making it ideal for high two hand grips. Now all of a sudden I find myself adding another Sig to my wish list.

Political
Story: The California Police Chiefs Association has reversed its position for firearms microstamping. The association has expressed concern over the “hasty” implementation of the technology and called for a further in-depth study of the technology before it is implemented by law in California.

Story: In Washington state gun banners have gained a new voice in the call for a so called “Assault Weapons Ban” from the International Association of Chiefs of Police. The article goes on to state “… a fully automatic weapon can fire far more rounds per second, but the bullet from a semi-automatic weapon is no less deadly. “ This is the secret plan for banning guns, incremental steps taken one at a time. First it was full auto weapons, now they want to ban semi-auto weapons because the bullets are just as deadly. Next they will simply want to ban weapons capable of firing more than one round between reloads because they are just as deadly, and then… Lets just face it, they want to ban all guns because any bullet is just as deadly as those fired from a machine gun.

Story: On the other end of the spectrum of Washington state politics Chelan County Sheriff Mike Harum has gone on record stating that no gun laws would have prevented the murder of the four officers.

Story: In Missouri the ban on handguns for council members at the Raymore City Council meetings will stand as the Mayor vetoed the ordinance and the council lacked the super majority needed to override the veto.

Story: In Georgia the Senate Majority Whip, Mitch Seabaugh, announced a bill that would have expanded where people licensed to carry would be able to legally carry. If the bill passes people would be able to legally carry into bars, college campuses, churches, the state Capitol, and even parts of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Story: In California the Right to Carry bill was defeated in committee by a vote of four to one. AB357 was a good bill and had a lot of potential for the people of California.

Story: In Indiana a bill which would allow people to keep guns secured in their vehicles while at work is getting a hearing in a house committee. Similar bills in the past have passed the senate but never did receive a committee hearing in the house.

Story: In Virginia we have an opinion piece that complains about state Delegate Scott Lingamfelter’s –I know I mispronounced that one.– effort to repeal handgun rationing. Sadly the author of the opinion piece is poorly educated on the subject and/or has done no research.

Story: In New Mexico this news article is calling for more gun control. From the video and facts in the article it appears that the shooting in question was a negligent discharge that resulted in the injury of one other party. Unfortunately we do not know if the subject who discharged the weapon was legally carrying or not. We do know the subject was not licensed but that applies only to concealed carry, if the subject in question was open carrying he may have been doing so legally. This article does mention training would have prevented the incident in question.

Story: In Oregon politicians started to attack their citizens second amendment rights in a special session of their legislature before it had even started. Interestingly enough the efforts in question seek to reverse gains in gun rights that the legislature approved and the governor signed in the last regular session.

Justice System
Story: An Oswego Grand Jury has concluded that a woman who shot an intruder during a home invasion was justified in her actions. You see folks, not all of New York is insane.

Random Shots aka misc.
Story: In California some Open Carry advocates caused some noise when they openly carried their unloaded handguns into a coffee shop. The advocates did notify law enforcement of their plans prior to enacting them and they still got a strong reaction from the public. Some people want to know why people would openly carry handguns when they can carry concealed, and this is why. Thanks to the strong public reaction and news coverage a number of people now know it is perfectly legal to do so and normalization of open carry has been taken one step further.

Story: In Kansas the number of people with permits to carry a concealed handgun is on the rise. This article lists some of the requirements to get a Kansas permit and overall is a positive article.

James R. Wrote in to give us a better breakdown on AZ Gunlaws:
On the whole, AZ gun law is simple:  what gun law?  There are very few restrictions, but AZ is very good and covering this in all sorts of legalese.  But here is the short on defensive use in AZ as it has been explained to me by instructors who were also former law enforcement:

*Deadly force is not legal when in defense of property (ie, the guy is stealing your truck…. you’re not allowed to shoot him for that.  if he’s pointing a gun at your or a loved one, and you are not in fear for you own life or the lives of your loved ones then that’s another story)

* You have the right to defend yourself in your own home or place of business.  If it is not expounded upon in the A.R.S and is otherwise not forbidden by other law, then it is legal.  Our castle doctrine wasn’t really forbidden in the first place.

* You must be in fear for your life or those of others when employing deadly force

* You are legally and civilly responsible for every round fired

* You are not protected from further civil action against you if it is determined that you were engaged in lawful self defense (unlike a state like OK where you are protected from civil action for the self defense act if a law court has adjudicated your case, ie ruled that you conducted legal self defense)

That is basically it.  What makes things complicated is the restrictions on where you can carry and who can carry where.  In general, CCW (concealed carry permit) holders carrying concealed have only a limited amount of places they cannot carry, and that is the list drawn out in the ARS.  AZ recently enacted restaurant and bar carry for patrons NOT drinking alcohol, unless the business posts a sign provided by the state or meeting state guidelines (it’s not a legally valid “no firearms” sign if it does not meet state requirements, and thus if someone carries concealed into that establishment, the establishment cannot by default then press charges against that person for carrying….. unless they then ask that person to leave it in the car and the person refuses, then it becomes trespassing, NOT illegally carrying into a prohibited place).  Schools are still no-nos for carrying concealed (thank you federal criminal protection act…. er…. I mean gun-free school zones act) as are federal premesis, etc.  This is where things get convoluted:  where you can carry and where you can’t.

In general, open carry, while legal and constitutionally protected (state constitution explicitly says that the right of the individual to keep and bear arms shall not be inhibited or forbidden) is restricted by exceptions to the law more than concealed is.  There is current legislation before the AZ legislature that, if passed (and it is expected to pass easily) will make concealed carry as legal as open carry, ie you do not need a permit to legally conceal carry.  However, carrying concealed into licensed (liquor) establishments that allow consumption on premises, and other such areas where exceptions to the general carry prohibition are overridden for those holding valid conceal carry permits and carrying concealed will still require the person to hold a recognized permit when carrying concealed at those places.  Yes, AZ gun rights groups and legislators are looking at getting that changed as well, but we still are taking small steps.  We’ve still got some vocal and vicious anti-gun nuts here that need to be tip-toed around.  They went nearly ballistic with this past years gun legislation, and that was just passing common-sense legislation.

To see the anti-gunner’s effectiveness here, google “arizona concealed carry eateries” to find several websites which list which places to eat are pro-carry or neutral (thus green lighting licensed conceal carry on their liquor-selling grounds) and which places (whether or not they sell alcohol for consumption on premises) have posted valid “no firearms” signs (even if they’ve hidden them by only posting the sign next to the liquor license….. though it IS a defense against prohibited carry if the offender was not aware of the posted sign b/c it was not placed in a visible location).  There is now a movement among gun rights advocates to, when eating at a place that prohibits concealed carry by the posting of the sign, to obey the law and go unarmed, but to leave the management with a little card that makes it clear that they will no longer spend their money at that establishment or it’s other chain locations.  It simply shows a no-gun sign equalling a no $$ sign and reading “Your ‘no pistols’ policy is a welcome mat for criminals… So I’m going to take my money somewhere safer!  Criminals prefer unarmed victims… why advertise the fact?  Please consider removing the sign and winning me back as a customer”  Surprisingly, this has actually caused several of the smaller eateries (who were either misinformed about what the restaurant carry legislation allowed or were ignorant about gun law in general and got the sign more out of ignorant panic than due to gun-hatred or corporate pressure) to remove the sign and in some cases contact the person who told them “see ya.  I’m not coming back till the sign comes down” to say “thank you.”

The other laws which were passed were ones clarifying the definition of “defensive display” to allow one to display defensively as part of an escalation before having to fire defensively WITHOUT defining such display as brandishing.  The law beforehand was vague and essentially if one could not defensively discharge one’s weapon in defense, then one could not defensively display one’s firearm either (like saying “I’m armed,” revealing a concealed firearm, or resting one’s hand on the weapon’s frame) without being charged with brandishing a firearm.  It has now been clarified to allow such displays, and define these displays as defensive displays that are valid when one is in fear for one’s life (even if it may not yet be completely legally defensible to fire in self defense, or the person is not yet in THAT much fear for their lives that they feel they need to fire in self defense).

The 3rd law in the trio last year was one that prohibited businesses and property owners from forbidding employees or tenants from securely locking their firearms out of sight in their vehicles while those vehicles were parked on premises.  This essentially was a change in law which specifically covered the interior of one’s vehicle as being part of the person’s private property and thus included it in the area in which any person legally allowed to own a firearm is, by right, allowed to keep a firearm.  It prohibits employers from taking action against an employee for storing their weapon in their car which is parked on premises or from a landlord taking action against a tenant doing the same.  Beforehand, the state took no stand on this and business and landlords were allowed to do this as they wished as there was no law for or against it.  With this law, the state has positively forbidden such hostile action against gun owners.

Personally, what I hope to see next is comprehensive defensive shooter protection by the state.  That is, if a person is ruled to have legally used self-defense (such a ruling being defined as “having used a firearm in self defense and either acquitted in trial, ruled ‘no bill’ from a grand jury, charges dropped by the state, or failure to charge individual with a crime pertaining to illegal gun use in the pertaining incident) then by state law, that person is then protected an exempted from any and all civil action in relation to that incident.  Thus, the crook or surviving family of a late-crook could NOT sue a person in relation to their defensive use of a firearm.  Further, I’d like to see that law also forbid a civil suit pertaining to the defensive use of a firearm from proceeding forward until the state had ruled (defined as above) on the criminality of the use.  This would create uniformity of law for those who would defend themselves with a firearm but may not have the funds for defending themselves against frivolous lawsuits.  Even if one were to win such a suit, most of us do not have the kinds of funds available in which to pay an attorney, NOR would counter-suing be a valid method of restitution knowing how long and tied down civil suits can become.  Just the act of initiating a lawsuit and forcing it to court is a huge deterrence to self-protection, no matter HOW legal it is according to the criminal code.

Anyway, hope this helps a little with understanding gun law and our own unique issues here in the Grand Canyon State.  We’re far more free here than in the neighboring People’s Republic of California, but we’re not where we ought to be yet, but if there’s one state which is closer than most to being fully free from victim-rich-environment laws, it’s Arizona.

This Weeks News

Criminals In action:
Story: A man is recovering in Ohio after being shot in an attempted robbery by two suspects.  There appears to be a rash of robberies happening in the Hamilton area.

Story: A Popeye’s restaurant was robbed by an armed suspect who struck a woman with his weapon in the face because she was not moving fast enough.

Open Carry:
Story: In this article the author traveled to Oregon and open carried while there as Oregon does not recognize any out of state concealed carry licenses.  His adventure in Oregon was uneventful and people really didn’t pay him much attention except one little boy.

Self Defense:
Story: For those who are planning to take advantage of the new federal law that will allow concealed carry in National parks, you have a little over a month to get ready.  The law goes into effect on February 20, 2010 and will make national parks subject to the same laws and regulations as state parks in regards to weapons.

Story: Two armed robbery suspects were hospitalized for injuries received from an armed clerk at the sandwich shop they were robbing.

Hunting:
Story: British Hunters are complaining about hysterical police response to legal field sports.  The best way to say this is British Police are unaware that there is not only legal gun ownership, albeit limited, but they seem unaware that hunting is also legal.

Political:
Story: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has added an amendment to the Obama Care bill to prohibit using the bill to tighten restrictions on firearms.  This does nothing to reduce my opposition to the bill just as  spitting in the ocean won’t raise the water level.

Story: I have covered this story on the podcast before, but the on going debate over the ban on guns in the New Hampshire state house continues.  The issue has been decided and will take legislative action to change.  This article does however point out that someone who wants to do harm to the legislators will most likely not carry openly or have a license to carry.

Story: Andy Martin who is running for the Senate seat in Illinois has answered a gun rights questionnaire, and in my opinion received a failing grade.  I would like to point out that he is not completely bad and may be better than some of the other candidates.

Story: The fight over gun rights is heating up in California regarding Concealed Carry Permits in Riverside County.  The Sheriff’s office has stated that they intend to ignore a petition calling for Self Defense to be added as a reason that people may be issued a Concealed Carry Permit.  I think its time to elect a new sheriff if the people there want their right to carry.

Story: The New Jersey Gun rationing law is about to receive some changes.  While the changes in question are not the best solution, they are at least a good first step in repealing the law outright.

Story: In California Assembly Bill 357 would transition California from may issue to Shall issue in regards to concealed handgun licenses.

Story: The George Town County School Board in South Carolina is considering taking action to revise its policy on concealed weapons.  The school board’s policy is far more restrictive than state law and appears to be in violation of the state’s preemption laws.

Story: New Mexico State Senator George Munoz has prefiled a bill for the upcoming session that would legalize carry in places that serve alcohol in some cases.  This would be similar to forty other states which have similar laws.

Story: Iowa State Rep. Kent Sorenson sponsored a bill that would have made Iowa require no license to carry a firearm openly or concealed.  While the bill was defeated, it was by only one vote and it offers hope that it will happen in the near future.

Courts:
Story: An attorney had his concealed carry license and his weapon seized by an officer who acted in an overly aggressive manner.  The officer later refused to return the license and the weapon to the attorney because he could not verify the license.  As it turns out the reason the attorney lost the case is not based on a second amendment issue, its because he challenged the detention itself and never pleaded a second amendment issue.  This case was not a gun rights case even though it should have been.

Story: The guns in bars law in Tennessee will be getting another chance in court as the Tennessee Court of Appeals has agreed to hear the case.  I still think legislators should go back and further clarify the law, but so that gun rights are further expanded.

Press:
Story: This “reporter” titled his article “Small gun groups don’t stand chance vs. U.S. Government” and the only time he even comes close to the title is when he is ranting about a cowboy mentality not holding up to U.S. Soldiers and snipers shooting back.  This piece is one of those “Its a slow news day and I want to demonstrate how biased I am” articles that we are starting to see more of.

Sports:
Story: Sports fans everywhere are getting a healthy dose of “Guns are bad” news coming about due to an incident where two Washington Wizards players may have pulled guns on each other during an argument.

Random Shots:
Story: A shooting by a man who could not legally own a firearm gets significant coverage by the media while a shooting spree that was stopped by an armed citizen gets nearly none.  Sorry folks they really don’t have an agenda, its just our imaginations….

Story: Expect a rise in crime for the Philippines as they have a six month total ban on guns during their election period.  The ban is intended to prevent election related gun crime.

Story: With the Candian Parliament session ending, plans to scrap the long gun registry will continue where they left off when Parliament returns to session in may.

Story: South Dakota has experienced a record setting year for concealed carry permits.  Permits were up 15.6% from last year and 68% from 2005.  If you have listened to earlier episodes of this podcast then you already know that this is not an isolated trend.

Jon’s Daughter’s Story:

Jon’s daughter is currently attending college in a state where colleges are no carry zones. One afternoon in October as she was en route to her vehicle she observed a large older male subject over six feet tall, weighing over two hundred pounds that appeared to be following her. She continued to observe the subject as she made her way to her vehicle and noted that he kept a row of vehicles between them while they were walking. At this point she retrieved her keys so that she could quickly access her vehicle if she had to. Eventually she made it to her car and the subject at this time made his move and attacked. He ran around her vehicle and pressed her against it then demanded her keys and her purse. Rather than be a victim, although unarmed, she fought back. A quick punch to the throat caused the subject to fall to the ground, but the fight was not over, she continued to fight back by kicking the subject in the face and groin areas which did not disable her attacker as he was soon able to flee when the college security guards arrived.

Upon arrival at the scene the guards restrained her while they yelled at her about assault. During this time the subject was managed to flee the scene and was able to avoid capture. Now the guards took her statement, filed a report, and took photos of her (Thankfully minor) injuries that she sustained during the attack. Now there is more to the story, but It revolves around the low quality of campus security and to expand on that I would have to name the college and I do not wish to do so in order to protect the victim’s privacy. But here’s the way Jon finished the story, and I quote: “She is not a victim; she is a “MUGGING VICTOR!” He also goes on to add that she turns 21 this year and will be getting her carry permit.

In review we can say: If she had not been aware of her situation she probably would have lost the fight. Now only her attacker knows what would have happened if he had succeeded, but I do not even want to think about that. We can also note that even if your unarmed you can successfully fight back and win in many situations if you are prepared. We can also take comfort in knowing that this young woman is still with us and relatively unharmed.

Story: A suspect who was waiting for a hearing attacked one deputy, stabbing him in the face with an improvised weapon. The suspect then took that deputy’s weapon and shot another deputy in the upper leg when the second deputy went to assist the first. Additional deputies responded and managed to restrain the suspect without any significant injuries to themselves or the suspect.

Story: In Ohio a car on I-74 was “riddled with bullets” as part of a drive by shooting. The 19 year old, so called victim, has a stolen gun on him and may have crossed paths with his attackers.

Story: In another breakdown of the victim selection process a home owner shoots and injures two masked suspects who where in the process of attempting a home invasion. Police have taken two wounded suspects into custody but have not released their names as the investigation is still pending.

Story: How do you stop a crime wave? The answer is simple, arm more citizens. With 22 home invasions, a double murder, an attempted murder of a doctor, among other crimes citizens in Winchester Massachusetts are getting tired of it and are starting to take steps against it. The attempted murder above was stopped when an armed citizen shot and killed the suspect.

Story: The Bull Moose Hunting Society is basically hunting club 2.0 for urban folks. Unfortunately they believe that both over-regulation and under-regulation of gun ownership is dangerous and disconcerting. But it is a step in the right direction for people who at one point knew nothing about hunting, and possibly even knew nothing about guns.

Story: The city of Sacramento has field a brief supporting Chicago in the upcoming landmark case of McDonald V. Chicago. Who would have thought that a city with a history of banning guns would support another in a court case that could affect their gun bans as well.

Story: The Second Amendment Foundation has filed a lawsuit in the US District Court for the District of Colombia against the United States Attorney General Eric Holder over his decision to enforce federal laws against the purchase of firearms by non-resident United States citizens. So the Government says if you don’t live here your Second Amendment doesn’t apply. Lets try that with any other part of the Bill of Rights and see what happens…

Story: A federal appeals court has ruled against a man who illegally manufactured nine machine guns after the September 11, 2001 attacks because he felt his national guard unit was not equipped well enough.

Story: Here we have a piece that apposes the the Veterans Second Amendment Protection Act because “It endangers the public.” All I can figure is they really don’t like soldiers so they don’t want them to have guns. This bill is intended to stop abuses by the Veterans Administration where they are forcing vets to loose their second amendment rights as a matter of procedure without involving the courts.

Story: The Associated Press has published a fair article on officer related gun deaths. This article about the article in question is a must read and it points out some important facts mentioned in the AP article.

Story: The Terrorist Watch List, also known as the “No Fly List”, which gun banners want to use to prohibit people from buying guns has offically reached one million names. While 95% of the names on the list are foreign, many of those names are similar or identical to the names of citizens in the United States.

Story: People in Sublette county in Wyoming are complaining because people at a ranch shoot guns. The ranch has been there for years, and the new neighbors have not. If you move to a new location where something is common place you really have no right to complain when things do not change because you moved in.

Story: An Oklahoma state senator has proposed legislation that would offer tax breaks on firearms but not on related purchases. The proposed legislation would make handguns, shotguns, and rifles tax free a few days each year, probably in August just before hunting season starts.

Story: A Harley-Davidson Dealership in Bloomington Indiana has made its position against a newspaper’s decision to make a searchable database of Concealed Carry License holders available to the general public.

Story: A man Turned in nearly sixty firearms at a Compton gun “Buy Back” that netted a total of 232 firearms. All the weapons will be destroyed according to the article, so if you had a stolen gun that ended up at the buy back you won’t be getting it back. Now let me consider those property rights in this new context again.

Story: When the government refuses to take action against a potential terrorist whose own father warned the United States embassy about who can we trust to protect us? The answer to that is the same as it would be if they had taken steps to intercept this guy before he got onto a plane. The answer is ourselves. We the people have the second amendment to protect ourselves and our nation, its not so much about protecting arms as it is about protecting freedom.

Story: The “Obama Effect” has caused 2009 to be a boom year for gun sales despite the faltering economy. The primary factors behind the boom in gun sales is fear that with a president who has an anti-gun history, a congress dominated by a party with gun control as a significant part of their campaign platform, and the government is filled with anti-gun rights bureaucrats, has caused people to get the guns they want now rather than wish they had gotten them later.

Story: What are your options when a school shooting happens and no one knows what to do? What happens when the alert system fails to warn students who expect it? What happens when there is no way to secure the doors against an attacker who is armed? Fortunately the gunman in this story was poorly prepared as well, I have to say he was a product of the environment he was in.

Story: The state of Georgia may expand the places where licensed gun owners can carry. Opponents of this particular expansion are repeating the same old song of blood in the streets that has always been proven not to be the case.

The News:
California:  A student who was suspended for having shotguns in his vehicle which was parked off campus now has assistance from the NRA, and the California Rifle and Pistol Association.

Florida: The Department of Children and Families has decided to no longer document whether prospective foster families own firearms or not.  DCF officials will discuss gun safety but they will no longer ask or document if the prospective parents own guns.  They will however require prospective parents to sign documents stating they are aware that Florida law requires loaded guns to be locked and secure place away from children.  Without seeing this document I can not comment on it, however at this point I fear it may be used against parents who have a Florida Concealed Weapons License.

Illinois: Mayor Daley defends the city’s gun ban despite not having enough money.  While I pity the folks who will be loosing valuable services in Chicago, I do have to thank their mayor for helping us engrave our gun rights in stone.

Illinois: Senate hopefuls debate their position on second amendment issues including assault weapon bans, the scope of the second amendment, and others.

Indiana: If your Dating in Indiana be careful.  Four men who were meeting women they met on a chat line were robbed when three other men robbed them of everything they had on them, including their clothes, at gun point.

Indiana: The completely unbiased newspaper, ”The Herald Times” has created a controversy for gun owners, manipulated concerned citizens, and has since refused an on-air debate.  Yep, completely unbiased.

Iowa: Discussions about changes to gun laws, and carry permits, to make them both more consistant and better suited to the needs of Iowa citizens is currently happening.

Massachusetts: Although the state has made its position against gun rights known, the armed citizens of Massachusetts have grown in numbers.  The number of people getting gun permits has surged by over 15% in the last two years surprising everyone regardless of their position in the pro-rights vs anti-rights  side in the debate.

Michigan: Prisons are releasing dangerous prisoners too soon due to financial troubles.  This has resulted in an FBI agent being shot and the suspect being shot and killed.

Minnesota: Ramsey county sheriff Bob Fletcher seems to have used data about gun owners in an illegal manner.

New Hampshire: The state legislature slipped in a new regulation that created a new victim rich environment in the state capitol complex.  Essentially only law enforcement who are in active duty can carry a firearm in the state capital complex.

New York: The Otsego County representatives voted along party lines regarding gun rights at a recent meeting.  The issue at hand was should they adopt a resolution to advise State state lawmakers  to not adopt any further gun control.  The four Democrats on the board voted against the resolution while the ten Republicans voted for it.

Ohio: With close to one hundred thousand pounds of venison donated to local food banks, hunters have helped donate enough food to provide three hundred eighty two thousand meals to the needy.

Tennessee: Tennessee representative Bart Gordon has announced that he will not seek re-election next year.  Representative Gordon has proven himself to be pro-gun rights in the past, and I hope his successor, regardless of their party affiliation, follows in his footsteps.

Texas: The mass murderer who attacked unarmed soldiers had asked a radical Muslim Cleric about killing Americans in 2008 according to a news report.  Somehow the media and certain people in the government think that they can convince us this was not a Jihadist attack.

Washington: During the first six months of the year, when the surge in gun sales was still young, murder fell by 10 percent when compared to the same period last year.  You see the criminals are not completely stupid, when everybody notices gun sales are up they start to rethink the value of their life.  So keep buying guns, lets see how far down we can drive these crime rates.

National: Gun control advocates are playing word games again.  The only thing about tightening things is if you tie a string around your finger and keep tightening it, in the end you will either loosen it or loose the finger.

National: I figured I would toss in an obligatory article regarding the McDonald v. Chicago case.  Essentially more of the same, but we need to keep people aware that incorporation will be decided here.

National: The media likes to load the issue, ignore facts, and essentially tries to mislead the public on the issue of gun rights.  This article only touches the tip of the iceberg.

National: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has commits to the UN small arms treaty which looks like the biggest threat to our gun rights currently on the table.

International/Canada: The district of Coldstream in British Columbia has voted to allow the use of firearms in parts of the municipality while preventing it in others.  One Councillor said “It doesn’t ban hunting and high-powered rifles. It doesn’t go far enough…”  So there you go folks, now you see what we in the United States are looking at in a few years.

International/England: The revolt against being defenseless in England has begun.  The English political party known as the Tories wants to give residents who defend themselves in their own home legal protections against prosecution.

International/Mexico: In what appears to be a revenge motivated attack, in the gun free utopia of Mexico, a group of gunmen shot and killed the family of an elite Mexican Marine who participated in a raid that resulted in the death of a major drug kingpin.

Arizona:  Tuscon Police responded to a burglary of a gun store and arrested two men who were hiding on the roof.  The men were armed and had equipment needed to break into the business with them.  Not much to this story but I am starting to notice a trend of gun store burglaries.

California: The San Mateo County supervisor who proposed two new ordinances has backed away from supporting her proposed legislation.  Once ordinance would require gun owners to report lost or stolen firearms within a specific time after they “should have known they were stolen” while another would help regulate gun stores out of business.

California: The Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims has implemented changes to the county’s concealed carry policies that are making it easier for citizens to arm themselves.  This is a good idea because as the sheriff says she can’t put a deputy with every single citizen.

California: A seventy four year old man was arrested for carrying a firearm near a school.  The elderly man recently saw a newscast about the open carry movement and decided he could do so as well.  A shortcut that took him and his girlfriend near a school however caused him to violate the law and get arrested.  This is why I encourage listeners to read up and know the laws that apply to them.

Florida: A disabled homeowner was forced to shoot and kill a masked suspect who attacked him.  The 62 year old victim answered the door when the first suspect asked for assistance with his vehicle, which the victim declined to provide.  At this time the second suspect forced his way in and attacked him, forcing the victim to stop the second suspect.  The first suspect then fled, but was later aprehended.

Georgia: The Marta crime rate has fallen in the wake of the bill that expanded gun rights for licensed individuals.

Illinois: The state police will review a controversial web page that essentially says that women should not actively fight back against attackers, including rapists, but should instead use passive techniques to attempt defend themselves.

Louisiana: A homeowner defended himself from an attack by an armed intruder who kicked down a door and shined a weapon mounted laser into the residence.  The homeowner shot and killed the armed suspect.

New York: The New York State Rifle and Pistol Association has announced the 2010 Second Amendment Advocacy day in Albany on January 12, 2010 from 9:00am to 1:00pm local time.

Ohio: The media is reporting that some “Nice” armed suspects are robbing pizza shops.  Personally I don’t consider anyone committing a crime with a weapon to be nice, especially if they put a gun to someone’s head.

Ohio: A Man was killed in Mason when officers used a less lethal weapon to stop the suspect from assaulting an officer.  The less lethal weapon in this case was a Taser.

Ohio: A man was shot and killed inside his own home during a suspected robbery.  This is why you should carry, even while your at home.

Ohio: A Cincinnati cab driver was assaulted with a blunt object as part of a failed robbery.  Passersby saw the attack and flagged down a police officer.  The suspect was a homeless man who was later arrested.

Ohio: a Cincinnati woman was brutally raped and stabbed by a neighbor.  I guess she didn’t follow the Illinois State Police suggestion of vomiting on herself.

Pennsylvania: A man who was arrested for violating an illegal law has been found not guilty by an appeals court.  Essentially he removed a firearm from his checked baggage in a non-secure area of the airport, holstered it, and started to leave.  An officer who observed the action illegally arrested the victim for violating a county ordinance that had been invalidated by the courts a decade before.  Unfortunately he had been convicted in a lower court and was forced to appeal in order to clear his name.

Pennsylvania: The Philadelphia justice system is proving itself inadequate and in need of changes.  Problems such as extremely poor conviction rates and witness intimidation are contributing to what seems to be an unchecked increase in violent crime.  In times like these it is important to remember that when seconds count the police are only minutes away.

Pennsylvania: Lawlessness runs wild among those who are supposed to enact and enforce laws in the state as many communities are violating the state’s preemption clauses, the state police commissioner  supports these communities and illegally changes the way some guns are sold.  There may come a time when the government doesn’t respect the law and the citizens may be forced to bring it under control.  Hopefully that will be done by use of the soap box and the ballot box, but the ammo box may have to be opened up at some point.

Pennsylvania: An off duty police female officer was the victim of an attempted car jacking when a fourteen year old male pointed a handgun at her and ordered her to get out of her vehicle.  She got out of the vehicle and chased down the suspect who attempted to flee.  The boy and four accomplices were all arrested and have charges filed against them.

Texas: More than 50 firearms were taken in the burglary of a Montgomery County Gun Store.  Ten or twelve shotguns were take while the rest were handguns.  Higher quality weapons were stolen leading the store owner to think that the weapons were stolen so they could be resold.

Texas: Two Lewisville women have been robbed at knife point, the first victims screams for help drove her attacker off after he took some property.  The second woman disarmed her attacker and drove him off, the suspect did flee with his second victim’s wallet.

Washington: A Seattle resident continues to fight against the cities illegal firearms ban on public property.  I had reported on the show earlier Bob Warden had taken steps to start his lawsuit, as of Monday he has filed a request for a preliminary injunction to prevent the ban from being enforced.

Washington: Some state law makers are attempting to push a ban on the sale of semi-automatic firearms and require current owners to go through background checks in order to keep their firearms.

National: As the number of citizens who are licensed to carry a handgun increases, the number of police officers who are killed in the line of duty decreases.

National: A Federal judge for the northern district of Georgia Has ruled that legally carrying a concealed weapon is grounds for forcible detention and disarmament by police.

International/Australia: Sheriff Jim Wilson, who retired from law enforcement in 1996 recently went on a buffalo hunt in Australia.  I suggest that you follow the link if you are interested in hunting.

International/Mexico: The severed heads of six police officers have been found in the Mexican State of Durango.  Yep, those gun control laws are making Mexico a safer place.  Well for the criminals maybe.

Arizona: The Arizona Game and Fish commission has set the 2010 Elk and Pronghorn Antelope Hunting Orders.

Arizona: All hunters who were overdue after a severe storm have now been accounted for.

Colorado: Last week I mentioned some articles on this topic, however Colorado State University has chosen to ban legal carry on its campuses.

Colorado: A law maker plans to introduce a bill that would nullify the gun ban at CSU.

Georgia: HB 615 would legalize concealed campus carry for Georgia residents who are licensed.

Illinois: Nine Chicago residents died during the Thanksgiving weekend even though Chicago has some of the strictest gun control laws in the United States.

Illinois: The city of Peoria may be pilot city for concealed carry in Illinois. Currently the state senator who will sponsor the legislation is waiting to see what the outcome of the McDonald versus City of Chicago case will be.

Illinois: The Farm Bureau Board supports concealed carry for Illinois residents. I think they may be on to something here.

Maryland: An off duty officer shot and critically wounded a suspect who was armed as was his accomplice. The officer remained on the street took a defensive position and opened fire on the unsuspecting suspects. The suspect that was not injured fled the scene but was captured.

Michigan: State Senator Jason Allen of Traverse City is proposing a moose season for the state. Hunters are optimistic while animals rights groups are most likely in panic mode.

Montana: At least nine of the animals killed in the gray wolf hunt appear to be animals that were preying on livestock. These findings could help in a court case that aims to restore the animals to the endangered species list.

New Hampshire: The Tamworth selectmen have chosen to bring their policies into compliance with the state’s preemption laws. I mentioned this was on the agenda during last weeks episode of the podcast, you can see the show notes for both episodes to learn more.

New Jersey: After much controversy the one gun a month law may be changed. A bill passed the assembly by a margin of 77 to 0 that would modify the law to better protect citizens and businesses.

New York: Senator Schumer has caused members of a Fish and Game Club to be upset. He used the Club’s facilities to announce legislation that would give hunters a tax break if donate venison. The members have no issues with the legislation, its just that the senator has not been very helpful to gun rights advocates.

New York: An officer shot an killed a suspect who was armed with a Mac-10 pistol in times square. Looks like those extremely strict gun laws did nothing to stop him.

Ohio: Farmers and hunters are working together to feed the needy by harvesting deer and donating the venison so that it can be processed and given to those who need it.

Ohio: An armed suspect demanded cash and tied up a clerk at a Days Inn hotel.

Oregon: A state court will determine if a sheriff can block access to information regarding concealed weapons permits. I don’t see this as a privacy issue, I see it as a safety issue. Lets take an abused woman who got a concealed carry license and moved to avoid a stalker. Now that stalker might find her if these are considered public records. Lets also consider the smarter criminals who will request the permit information, look to see if their intended target is armed so they know that there will be guns in the house and they can plan on simply killing the resident before they have a chance to defend themselves. The examples could go on and on.

Pennsylvania: A teacher his weapon and stopped an attack that could have resulted in the murder of a third party.

Pennsylvania: The city of Aliquippa has passed an ordinance requiring residents to report lost or stolen firearms within 72 hours of discovery. So they expect police to arrest people for violating a law that violates the state’s preemption laws?

South Carolina: A homeowner fires a shotgun at intruders forcing them to flee. Later a suspect was arrested at the hospital where he was seeking treatment for gunshot wounds to his legs.

Texas: A lawyer was forced to fire two shots at an armed burglar who began to approach him. The victim was afraid the suspect might stab or take his seventeen year old daughter hostage so he grabbed his weapon and shot the suspect. The suspect was hit in the left shin and was reported to be in good condition. The victim has a Concealed Handgun License.

Texas: A bank inside a grocery store was robbed leading to multiple shots fired and left at least one person injured. The suspect escaped in what police suspect was a stolen vehicle.

Virginia: A suspect was arrested after police responded to a call of shots fired at a mass murderer’s playground: A school campus. No one was injured in the shooting at Northern Virginia Community College.

West Virginia: The governor and some invited guests will have a guided hunt where all deer harvested will be donated to a charity. We seem to be seeing a lot of these hunters feeding the hungery stories right now don’t we.

Wisconsin: A bill currently before the state legislature would require micro stamping on semi-automatic firearms manufactured or sold in the state if the firearm was manufactured on or after January 1, 2011. The article goes on to list some talking points from both sides.

National: This article claims more than 850 firearms seized last year in Illinois came from Indiana. Surprisingly the article says that guns are not the problem, its the behavior of the people using them.

National: An amendment to the omnibus spending bill would force AmTrak to allow passengers to transport unloaded firearms in a locked case similar to how it is done on airlines.

International/Canada: Gun control is becoming endangered in Canada as a result the press is crying.

International/Canada: A Jeweller who was forced to shoot a suspect in an armed robbery wants more gun rights. The suspects entered his store and started their robbery. He went into the vault, retrieved his weapon, loaded it, and engaged the suspects. At one point he retreated back into the vault to reload.

International/England: 360 prisoners, 260 of which are there for murder, that were sentenced to life have been moved to low security facilities. Many of these facilities allow prisoners to come and go as they please.

International/Kenya: A suspected weapons smuggler was arrested while possessing 100,000 rounds ammunition and an assortment of firearms.

Arizona: Prima County will be changing its gun laws so that employees and citizens can store firearms in their vehicles in county parking lots.  The change is required by state law which was changed this year.

Arizona: After spending almost three years in prison for shooting a man in a case that was clearly self defense Harold Fish is finally free thanks to the Arizona State Supreme Court allowing an appellate court decision to stand.  This case brought about changes to the law so that people involved in self defense shootings would have less to fear from a legal stand point.

California: San Mateo county officials want more gun control.  Their proposed ordinance calls for increased restrictions where firearms and ammunition can be sold and background checks and permits for employees.  Where I see this going is that In the future they could refuse to allow new permits and when all permits expire the gun stores would have to close without any new legislations.

California: We have an opinion piece that is so obviously anti-gun I won’t go into detail but I suggest you read the article for your self.

Colorado: Colorado State University is currently considering a ban on concealed carry for their campus.  The university’s so called “safety team “ wants the university president to make their campus safer for robbers, killers, rapists, and terrorists.

Colorado: Student Leaders urge CSU president to keep their campus safe for them by not restricting concealed carry.

Connecticut: Not that they were ashamed for not having a story about them, Connecticut lets us know they too have seen an increase in Gun Permits.  More specifically there has been an increase of 53% percent.

Indiana: one out of every twenty six Monroe County residents are licensed to carry a handgun.  With that kind of odds I bet criminals are really thinking about not doing business in Monroe County.

Kansas: Kansas has had concealed carry for almost three years, the articles go on to say that there have been no major incidents or wide spread controversies regarding concealed carry.  However less than one percent of the population have received their concealed carry permits.  Even more interesting is the fact that less than 0.007 percent of the population has applied for a permit while being unable to receive it.

Maryland: The press is reporting that three people were injured in an attack where a machine gun was used.  I am going to say that this particular machine gun was not legally possessed by the shooter.  I will say that it was either stolen, never registered, or smuggled into the country.

Massachusetts: A teen was injured in a shooting inside a high school gym where basketball tryouts were being held.  The teen was reported to have dropped out of school a year ago.  Police are still looking for a suspect.

Michigan: A Detroit Parish is holding “Thug Sundays” where “Thugs” and “Thugettes” can come to receive forgiveness and healing.  The church is even sponsoring “Gun Buybacks”.  Now let me see if I can follow this.  If I am catholic I can go to this parish, receive forgiveness from the church, sell my gun, leave church with peace of mind while I drive to buy another stolen handgun and maybe some narcotics?

Michigan: A new bill in the state house would prohibit colleges from banning legal carry of firearms.  The bill essentially forces colleges to recognize the state law preempts their own.

Minnesota: For the first time since 1973 there have been no hunting fatalities during deer season.

Missouri: A Raymore city councilman seeks to permit councilmen and concealed carry permit holders to carry at city council meetings.  He also wants licensees to be able to carry in public parks.

New Hampshire: The Tamworth Selectmen will address what the fire department refers to as an illegal gun regulation that prohibits city employees from carrying a firearm without written permission from the Selectmen.

New Jersey: Bills A4308 and A4304 are a prime example of why we need Incorporation for the second amendment.

Ohio: The state Attorney General released concealed handgun license data for the third quarter of 2009.  The data shows a 54% increase over the same period as last year.

Oklahoma: A Lincoln county resident shot and killed an intruder who broke in through her sliding glass door while she was on the phone with 911.  This story says that her attacker did not care that she was on the phone with law enforcement, then threatened her and continued to break in after she warned him that she was armed.

Texas: State Rep. Chuck Hopson along with other legislators has signed a brief supporting supporting incorporation for the second amendment.

Texas: An armed neighbor intervenes in a home invasion by three men  The suspects were in the home demanding drugs and money when the neighbor decided to intervene.  The neighbor exchanged fire with at least one suspect and was injured.  The neighbor was reported in critical condition while a woman in the house was grazed by a bullet.  One suspect was captured about two miles from the scene, while the other two remain at large.

Texas: A hostage situation and standoff in a Houston Church ended after the hostage escaped from her Husband and the subject later committed suicide.

Vermont: Hunters are good for the environment.  Wildlife specialist agree that hunters are critical to conservation in Vermont.

Wisconsin: The handgun microstamping legislation has had a hearing.  Both pro-rights and anti-rights sides were present along with the NRA.

Washington DC: Senator Bob Corker’s daughter, Julia, was carjacked about nine blocks from the capital.  Miss Corker suffered only minor injuries and is fortunate that her attackers didn’t so anything worse.

National: The supreme court has set a date to hear what may be one of the most important cases it will rule on in this century.  The case in question is McDonald V Chicago in which Alan Gura seeks to have the Second Amendment incorporated so that it applies to the states as well as the federal government.

National: The newly selected ambassador to the United Nations Human Rights Council wants the UN to make a countries sovereignty dependent upon its human rights record.  If the new ambassador could implement her change his could lead to the United States to being placed in a position of either giving up its sovereignty or forcing its citizens to disarm.

National: An attack on the Tiahrt amendment is an attack on gun rights.  Essentially gun banners hope to get rid of it so that gun sale background check data can be used to create gun registries.

International/Canada/Nova Scotia: Halifax regional police say the gun amnesty program is ending.  Should you turn in a functioning firearm you can receive a Camera and a gift card, if you turn in a ammo or a non-functional firearm you will get a gift card.  I personally see this forced gun buy back coming should the anti-rights people get their way.

International/United Nations: UN Officials are apposed to ships going to see armed while some ships are apposed to being victims of piracy.

I ended up having to record this on my notebook away from my regular computer.  the audio went through a lot of filters just to get it where it is.  I have several hours in this episode.  I am debating if I should simply record future episodes a day late rather than deal with this mess.  Sadly my desktop is better for recording the podcast but notebook beats my desktop system in every meaningful category hardware wise, both have the same Operating System and I used the same software on both.  Whatever the issue is I think its something to do with hardware compatibility.  So here is the episode that took more time and effort to record and filter than any five of the previous episodes combined.  So here it is, and this is as good as its going to get.

Alaska: We don’t get many stories from Alaska, or Vermont for that matter, but we have an Alaskan story this week.  The citizens of Alaska are invited to a Second Amendment Patriots rally.    Read the article for more information.

Arizona: The effort to ban lead ammunition for hunting spills over into Arizona.  Proponents of engineered science claim the birds are being contaminated by lead they eat.

California: Attorney General Jerry Brown supports gun rights in the McDonald Case.  I personally find this one interesting because the attorney general’s position will hopefully erode many of California’s gun laws.

California: A candidate running against the anti-gun rights Sheriff Sandra Hutchens has earned the support of a California Gun rights group.

Georgia: Politicians and local residences of Conyers Georgia met and discussed gun laws and efforts to improve race relations.  I wonder if the fact that many gun laws can be traced back to Jim Crow laws was brought up.

Illinois: A suspect in a robbery will be charged with his accomplice’s death that resulted from a failed robbery attempt in East St. Louis.

Indiana: Tired of seeing stories about other states Indiana has gotten itself a story about an increase in right to carry permits.

Nebraska: Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning has signed a brief supporting incorporation of the Second amendment Via the Fourteenth amendment in the McDonald case.

New York: The state legislature is debating a number of anti-gun bills.  Gun owners in New York need to take action to stop this nonsense.

New York: In this case we have an article that once again proves that revolving door justice does nothing to stop crime.

New York: Kirsten Gillibrand has further abandoned her constituents who are gun owners.  At one time the Junior Senator from New York proudly stated she was pro-gun.

North Carolina: A man sentenced to 50 years in prison has been paroled after serving 19 years.  Somehow I doubt this criminal has been rehabilitated.

Ohio: An opinion piece sums things up with the headline “Deer culling opponents need to get over it”  Basically hunting is far more humane than letting the animals over populate and then starve to death because the land can not support their numbers.

Ohio: Police are investigating a gang rape at College Hill Park where three suspects attacked and raped a woman at gun point.  A Weapon, training, and jogging during the day would have really helped this victim.

South Carolina: We have an opinion piece against the Firearm Tax holiday in this article.  More senseless anti gun rights that is masked as being a no tax breaks senseless drivel.

Tennessee: A Judge has ruled that the law which permitted Licensed gun owners to carry into bars to be unconstitutional under the Tennessee state constitution.  The law was found to be unconstitutional because it was too vague.

Texas: Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott signs a brief supporting incorporation of the Second amendment via the Fourteenth amendment.

Texas: A 49 year old Dallas man was shot and killed by police when he went outside to investigate a noise.  The issue is that the officer mistook his bb gun as a firearm and shot him when he did not comply with orders to stop and drop it.  Officers where in the area investigate multiple 911 calls of shots being fired.  This story shows why people need training.

Texas: Masked robbers who were attempting  to rob a convenience store shoot a customer while the clerk hides under the counter.  This story has video, and you should watch how the suspects act and how quickly they are in and out.

Washington: Snohomish County is considering repealing their ban on guns in parks to bring themselves into compliance with Washington state law.

Washington: The lawyer who went to the community center wearing a pistol in protest of the cities illegal ban has now sued the city for nominal damages of $1, Attorney’s fess, and court costs.  He is also suing Mayor Nickels for an unspecified amount in punitive damages in an effort to deter similar actions by Washington officials.

Washington: Four police officers were shot and killed by two gunmen in a coffee shop while the officers worked on their laptop computers.  Situational awareness is key, even when your armed.

Wisconsin: the Wisconsin State Senate Judiciary Committee will have two anti gun rights bills before it for consideration.  SB 174 would require micro-stamping on all newly manufactured handguns sold in Wisconsin while SB 367 is yet another Lost or Stolen firearms bill.  Listeners in Wisconsin need to contact their state senators and make their position known on these bills.  Its even better if your state senator is on the judiciary committee.

National: a Bipartisan majority of the United States Congress signs brief supporting gun rights in the McDonald Case.  Essentially they support incorporation of the Second Amendment through the Fourteenth amendment.

National: The United States Attorney General, Eric Holder, has demonstrated a case of Joe Biden syndrome and said something that he probably shouldn’t have.  Holder told a Senate committee that the Justice Department supports increased gun control.

National: The White House takes on gun rights groups that appose the so called “Health Care Reform” efforts.

National: The International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association has also filed a brief supporting gun rights in the McDonald case.

International/England: The British Chief Inspector of police has said British policing has “Lost its way.”

International/Honduras: Gun owners have been told to surrender their weapons before the election in an effort to combat violence.  Reports state that the firearms will be returned to the owners after the election.

Well, here’s episode 12, quite a bit going on here and I managed to do it with less than 2 hours sleep in the last 34 hours.

California: Veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are using their experience and training to help a California City combat gang violence. It would seem counter-insurgency techniques work on gangs as well.

Colorado: A home owner catches a burglar in his home wearing his boxer shorts. The victim confronted the suspect and fired a warning shot. Upon their arrival police arrested the suspect and found materials used to manufacture meth on a workbench.

Florida: Gun rights groups are pushing for changes to adoption laws to prohibit agencies from questioning prospective parents about guns.

Florida: Naked ninety one year old man holds an intruder at gun point. I don’t know about you, but I think I have an idea as to what aspect of that story disturbs me.

Idaho: An eleven year old boy was forced to shoot and kill a black bear in defense of himself and his two younger sisters while they were at home alone. The Department of Fish and Game stated they would have likely destroyed this animal themselves and that the family will not face any charges as a result.

Illinois: Police are searching for two suspects in an armed robbery where the suspects shot and killed the victim after he complied with their demands. The two suspects took one hundred dollars worth of cash and the victims cell phone.

Indiana: This article is about as biased as it can get. The title of “ no guns, more hugs” has to be the product of someone still too stoned to realize the seventies have passed. The reason I include this one in the links is because it can give us an idea of the logic used by those who appose our rights.

Iowa: Guns in national parks legislation was debated at the University or Northern Iowa. Good points were made by the president of the Iowa Carry, a state organization.

Maine: Hunting and fishing contribute nearly half a billion dollars to Maine’s economy with the firearms industry contributing even more money.

Maryland: A store owner took a weapon from one of two suspects then shot and killed one suspect with it.

Maryland: A Wilmington Liquor store clerk exchanged fire with two, possibly three suspects who were armed when they ordered him to the back of the store. At least one suspect was shot, he was pronounced dead at Christiana Hospital.

Michigan: Michigan Open Carry, which is a non-profit organization, aims to educate people in regards to gun rights in Michigan.

New York: Gun fight caused by a spilled drink results in police shooting two men, with one man dying. The deceased was an ex-con working as a security guard who had a gun in violation of the law.

North Carolina: Alan Gura appeared at a debate and discussed the right to bear arms.

North Dakota: More people buying guns, ammo, and getting permits to carry concealed in North Dakota. Interestingly enough this is the trend just about everywhere in our great nation. So help your state get an article like this one by buying more guns, ammo, and getting your license to carry.

Ohio: An armed suspect robbed a Popeye’s. The suspect fled as a passenger in a white car with a black top.

Pennsylvania: Castle doctrine to be considered this week.

South Carolina: Shoppers will pay no state or local taxes on firearms which can total as much as nine percent.

Tennessee: Burglars fear armed homeowners more than the police. Basically they know the police and the justice system will do little to them where a homeowner might seriously injure or kill them. 100% of the burglars interviewed in an FBI study stated they would not break into a home that they knew was occupied by an armed citizen who was home.

Texas: Here’s a story about three armed men robbing an armored truck in Houston. From what I can tell with the few details in the story, the suspects method was to wait for the guards to approach a business, then go at the guards shooting. In this situation the guards had two options, stand, fight, and risk being killed, or run away. Seeing how the guard who was shot was hit in the rear I think they made the smart choice and ran away.

Texas: A man was shot while sitting in his pickup at Walmart. Essentially the suspect approached the vehicle, aimed the gun at the victim and demanded money. The suspect then shot the victim before fleeing.

Washington: Kirby Wilbur, a well known conservative talk show host who is pro-gun, was fired. The station’s management has also canceled advertising contracts that relate to firearms. Current speculation is that the termination is over his stance on firearms.

Washington: Two men may sue over a gun ban in Richland parks that violates the state’s preemption law.

Wisconsin: Deer hunting is nearly a one billion dollar industry for Wisconsin. This article is discussing the impact of deer hunting on the economy but we can carry that information over to how gun control impacts the economy as well. Remember money spent during deer season puts more than venison on peoples tables.

Wisconsin: The Seventh Circuit Court has ruled that the Lautenberg Amendment may be unconstitutional. The court did not rule that the law was in violation of the second amendment but did remand the the case back to the district court so the government could establish a “reasonable fit between the statutes means and ends.”

National: The Second Amendment Foundation filed its brief in the McDonald Vs Chicago case. The foundation along with the Illinois State Rifle Association and four individual plaintiffs brought this case to challenge state gun laws under the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution and are seeking incorporation. This case has progressed much quicker than anyone could have hoped.

National: The NRA has also filed its brief in the McDonald Case.

National: The former head of U.S. Customs and Border Protection is calling for a new ban on so called assault weapons to help clean up Mexico.

International/England: Man who attempted to kill a police officer by spearing him with a crow bar is released after just two years.

International/Ireland: A world class competitor is challenging a ban on the equipment he uses to compete with. The equipment in question is guns.

International/Nicaragua: An arsenal of military weapons belonging to a Mexican drug gang was seized. The weapons seized include 58 firearms, two mortars, ten grenades, thirty sticks of TNT. Additionally over nineteen thousand rounds of ammunition was captured. I want to go to the gun show where they bought that stuff.

International/Somalia: Pirates attacked the Maersk Alabama again, this time an armed security detail that thwarted the attack.

International/South Africa: South African tax payers may end up paying for weapons confiscated and destroyed without compensation using a law that was illegal.

California: On an earlier show I discussed that the governor vetoed a bill to ban gun shows at the Cow Palace. Well The annual Crossroads of the West Gun Show drew a massive crowd at that location.

Florida: A Teacher who threatened to shoot students and kill the principal of a high school is causing additional concern as he may be released from jail on Bond. I wonder how many people are reevaluating that whole no guns at school thing now.

Illinois: Mayor Daley of Chicago doesn’t like the recent court ruling regarding guns in cars. He goes on to say the ruling could put police officers, and other first responders at risk. I guess he doesn’t realize that only people who are obeying the law will be affected by this ruling. Criminals carry anyway, legal or not.

Michigan: The number of people with Concealed Pistol Licenses continues to increase. According to the Michigan State Police there are more than two hundred and fourteen thousand people licensed to carry a concealed pistol.

Nevada: Sue Lowden answered the questionnaire from GONV (Gun Owners of Nevada). She is running for the same seat as Harry Reid. You can also see other candidates responses by visiting the link.

New Jersey: Hunters looking forward to change that may come with the new governor.

New Jersey: New gun laws may have caused Governor Corzine to loose his reelection bid.

New Jersey: Someone finally gets it. The chief of the task force reviewing New Jersey’s gun rationing law says retailers, among others, need an exemption to the law. I say get rid of the gun rationing law all together.

New Jersey: Judge says that a handicapped man can get gun permit.

New York: Another so called “No Gun Zone” Fails as a school principal is taken hostage for more than an hour by an armed suspect.

Ohio: A woman was killed and the police are unable to get witnesses to cooperate with their investigation.

Ohio: A three judge state appellate court panel has ruled the state’s preemption law as violating the states constitution.

Pennsylvania: the “Castle Doctrine “ bill is to be considered by the state house judiciary committee on Thursday November 19, 2009.

Texas: Students at Tarrant County College will be able to hold their empty holster protest, in spite of efforts by the campus administration, due to a ruling from the Honorable U.S. District Judge Terry R. Means. Students will not be able to wear their holsters in classrooms or hallways but they will be able to wear them and pass out materials in so called “public forum” areas.

Texas: A 20 year old man managed to shoot one suspect in a daring daylight home invasion. The other suspects were able to flee with no obvious injuries. The story breaks down along the lines of suspects pull up, force victim into home at gun point, victim grabs his own gun and starts shooting. Two suspects flee leaving their wounded laying in his own blood. The injured suspect was flown to a regional hospital where he was listed as being in VERY critical condition.

Washington: The son of Washington’s Lt. Governor was shot in a work place dispute with his employer.

Wisconsin: Eau Claire county is considering the development of a public shooting range. This would give locals a safe place to shoot.

National: Gun banners afraid the United States Supreme Court might actually follow Constitutional law and precedent by incorporating the second amendment.

National: Gun banners claim there is a “Terror Gap” in our gun control laws. Essentially they want to be able to prohibit gun sales to people on the no fly list, keep records of NICS, also called Brady, checks, and in general use the blood of their victims to further their agenda of making everyone a victim of gun control.

International/Canada: The proposed abolition of the long gun registry is gaining support.

International/England: Man suspected of being an international gun runner. Maybe this is how the criminals get their guns.

International/England: A former soldier is facing jail time because he turned in a shotgun he found. This is zero tolerance taken to the extreme.

International/Malaysia: Women Shooters expected to bring home medals Laos South East Asia games next month.

International/Mexico: The Mexican Military is wary of the often corrupt Mexican Police forces. These corrupt forces are often in league with the gangs. Things are so bad over there that the military has warned the police chiefs they will use deadly force against them.

Arizona: While some establishments ban licensed carry out of fear, others openly welcome it for the security it provides. This stems from a law that allows license holders to carry into locations where alcohol is served provided they do not consume any alcohol while carrying.

Florida: The guns in parking lots law has survived a three year fight and now protects licensed carriers who wish to leave their firearm in their car. The law does not protect anyone who carries into their work place in violation of company policies. Now this law does exempt some work places.

Florida: The Orlando office mass shooting spree followed the shooting at Fort Hood by one day. This shooting left one dead and five injured. A reporter asked the shooter outside the police station why he did it, the shooter’s reply was “Because they left me to rot.” There are reports the shooter had been on medication and had spent time in a mental institution within the last year.

Massachusetts: A case regarding the states gun storage laws is headed for the state supreme court. The usual suspects are supporting their sides of the case. This case should be put on hold until after we hear from the United States Supreme Court in the McDonald Vs Chicago case.

Ohio: A resident shoots an armed intruder who burst through the door of his house. A second intruder was found by police hiding in the bathroom.

Pennsylvania: The mayor of Aliquippa thinks an ordinance to report lost or stolen firearms might be a good idea. Many of these ordinances and laws have a time limit for reporting the theft or loss. I constantly ask what happens to the person who is gone on vacation when their house is broken into and the firearms loss happens early enough that the owner doesn’t get back in time to report it inside the time limit? Additionally how will law enforcement determine when the firearm was lost or stolen?

South Carolina: A man was arrested for kidnapping and assaulting a woman. He had a prior arrest for the same charges with the same victim from an early incident. The victim refused to testify in that prior case and the suspect was sentenced based on a reduced set of charges. He was back out on the street in less than a year. This story goes to show you need to testify against someone who attacks you, even if you make up with them later.

Texas: We have another break down in the victim selection process in San Antonio Texas where an armed robber was shot while trying to get a camera from a man. The men met at an IHOP parking lot to conduct a transaction started on craigslist but things went bad when the so called buyer drew a gun. The seller drew his own gun and shot the suspect.

Washington: The NRA has started litigation against the city of Seattle over its gun ban that is illegal.

Washington: Gun control advocates plan a new push for an assault weapons ban while dancing in the blood of a slain police officer. To make matters worse the police have yet to determine the type of weapon used to kill the officer.

National: Backlash against “zero tolerance” policies starting to gain momentum. And here I thought tolerance was something taught in public schools.

National: Tennessee and Montana challenge Federal gun laws using the tenth amendment and state legislation.

International/England: England is experiencing a surge of attacks on people. The article states that a
“stranger assault” happens every thirty Seconds in England, the attacks are currently being tied to easy access to alcohol.

International/England: The mayor of London saves a woman from an attack by a gang of young women. At least one suspect was armed with and iron bar. The mayor confronted the gang when he heard the victim cry for help and then picked up the weapon after the gang dropped it. After picking up the weapon the mayor proceeded to chase the gang off with their own weapon.

Ok, by far not my best work but I haven’t felt this bad in a long time.  My sinuses are trying to kill me and my editing is less than spectacular on this one.  With that said after the news I will finish up the Shot Placement and Transfer of energy two part series and then I will move on to reading a fictional story that was submitted by a reader and then finish up the show.  Now please bear with me as I am barely able to talk and breath during the show.

Georgia: A female victim found a male suspect inside her home.  She produced and fired a handgun at him forcing the suspect to flee.  It appears the suspect was unharmed as he fled.  Police suspect the motive was burglary but nothing appeared to be missing.

Georgia #2: A woman claims to have acted like a dog in order to scare off a potential burglar.  I personally think the sound of a pump shotgun being loaded would have worked just as well, actually I think it would have worked better if the suspect had actually entered the residence since she would have been able to stop him.

Iowa: An eleven year old girl was suspended from school for bringing a spent (read used or empty) shotgun hull to school so she could show it to her teacher.  Zero tolerance at its best because we all know an eleven year old with an empty shotgun hull can do all kinds of damage.

Louisiana: An armed man shoots at firefighters who were responding to a fire he set inside his apartment.  The whole incident appears to be over an eviction notice.

Massachusetts: A man was killed by an armed security guard at a hospital after he attacked and stabbed a doctor.

Michigan: Debate continues relating to Guns on Campus in Michigan, this particular article comes across as apposing the concept.

Minnesota: twelve men cleaned up trash along a stretch highway 55 near the Mendota bridge.  What makes this normally unremarkable event newsworthy is the fact that they were carrying guns.  What makes it even better is that no one was injured, shot, robbed, or attacked.

New Jersey: Newark Officials announce a gun buy back program.  Anyone turning in a gun will receive $200.  Now if this waste of tax payer money actually did something to stop crime.

New Jersey #2: Newark mayor Cory Booker has announced a program on youtube that I first thought was satire, but it turns out to be serious.  The city will pay $1000 to anyone who turns in someone who is carrying a gun.  So here’s my plan, go to Newark setup just outside the gun buy back and call in everyone who shows up!

New Jersey #3: A state appeals court has ruled that Americans have no second amendment right to buy a handgun.  We’ll see how well that works out once McDonald Vs. Chicago is decided.

Tennessee: Decatur County officials chose to rescind their previously enacted ordinance to prohibit guns in parks owned by the county and political subdivisions.

Texas: Burglar in Dalhart manages to shoot himself in the face with a gun.  I guess he would have benefited from knowing the four rules.

Texas #2: The theft of equipment from a Dallas SWAT supervisor’s unmarked SUV is causing some concern.  The equipment includes a weapon, ammunition, a badge, body armor, radios, for a start.

Washington: A Gang of three juveniles asked their victim for the time then, followed and robbed the man at gun point in the University District.  One suspect was booked while the other two were processed and released.  This article demonstrates the need for situational awarenes, the right to carry, and it demonstrates what is wrong with our current justice system.

National: Turns out that mayor Bloomberg is the nations biggest political spender in the nation in his efforts to be mayor of New York City.  In his three election campaigns he has spent, or will spend, an estimated $250,000,000 in total.

National: the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit has ruled that post offices are covered as “Sensitive places” under the Heller decision and includes the parking lot.

National: The fight over weapons in checked baggage for Amtrak could derail the transportation bill.

International/England: Police raid safety deposit boxes and find weapons, drugs, Police riot gear, and cash.  With all of England’s gun laws we know this story must be incorrect because only the government has weapons.

International/Scotland: Gun crime hits 10 year high in Scotland.  Remember the criminals will always find a way to get a weapon, their victims being armed is the best deterrent to their actions.

International/South Africa: President Zuma is calling for “reform” of the nations gun laws, and reform  in this case means he wants more gun control.

California: Orange County is in a state of unrest as the appointed sheriff imposes restrictions on Concealed Carry Permits.

Connecticut: Hunt to Feed aims to help feed people. Connecticut State Hunters can donate their harvested animals to help feed the needy, one deer can feed as many as 200 people.

Louisiana: A home invader was shot by the homeowner who was awakened by the suspect kicking in the door to gain access to the house.

Massachusetts: The governor has proposed regulations that would make it difficult, if not impossible, for gun clubs to continue operating. The stated purpose for these regulations are public safety but when people have no place to go learn or shoot safely public safety will suffer.

Michigan: Concealed weapons permit applications and approvals are on the rise. Like the rest of the states which provide for licensed carry in our nation, Michigan is no exception when it comes to increased interest in self defense.

New York: Rapper Lil’ Wayne has pleaded guilty to at least one weapons charge stemming from a 2007 incident as part of a plea bargain. The subject is also facing drug and weapon charges in Arizona from another incident in 2008.

Ohio: A subject with a warrant from Missouri was shot and killed as he attempted an armed robbery. This article only proves the need for more gun control so that career criminals can work safely.

Ohio #2: A home invasion goes wrong when the victim shoots one of his three attackers.

Oregon: An armed victim prevented her attacker from raping her. The victim grabbed a gun hidden near her bed and fired repeatedly forcing her attacker to flee. The attacker was a transient who let himself in through an unlocked door.

Pennsylvania: The state is currently experiencing a surge in license to carry applications and approvals.

Pennsylvania #2: A jewelry store owner shoots at armed robbers forcing them to flee. The robbers were attempting to restrain the victims with flex cuffs when the owner opened fire.

South Carolina: Volunteers needed to assist in effort to cleanup and maintain the Twin Ponds Rifle Range in the Francis Marion National Forest. The Details are in the link.

Texas: The Texas city of San Marcos has had three home invasions in two months. In this story the homeowner ended up shooting his attacker who was armed with a BB gun three times. The week prior ended with a College Student being shot when two males broke into his home. In the month before that four subjects broke into a home where the home owner shot three of them, two of the subjects died.

Washington: Seattle Mayor flagrantly violates state law and has signs posted that prohibit firearms in city parks.

National: The Centers for Disease Control is attempting to exploit loop-holes to get around a ban that was imposed by congress on doing research into gun control.

National: FBI says Police officers deaths fell sharply in 2008, maybe we can blame this on relaxed gun laws too…

International/England: London Police have recorded a spike in so called “Punishment Shootings” by gangs. This story must be false as English Gun Laws are very strict and criminals are always the first to obey the law.

International/Saudi Arabia: Residents of Saudi Arabia have recently been allowed to openly buy firearms. Many people are applauding the decision made by the Ministry of Interior, but it has been denounced by others.

California: Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has taken action on two gun bills that made it to his desk. He vetoed the bill that would have prohibited gun shows in the cow palace, but signed the bill that will eventually force the registration of ammunition purchases.

California #2: Legislation has been introduced to repeal AB962 before it even goes into effect.

Florida: When confronted with two subjects who attempted to rob him at gun point a Lakeland man shoots the armed attacker which effectively stopped the attack.

Georgia: A bank manager trades gunfire with an armed robber and looses his job.

Illinois: The Illinois Supreme Court has ruled that it is legal for people to transport firearms in the “ordinary boxes built into their cars” regardless of its purpose.

Iowa: A series of attacks around Simpson College has law enforcement, students and staff concerned.

Massachusetts: Two students were robbed at knife point in the campus.

New Hampshire: Police told to stop running NICS checks on gun owners before returning confiscated weapons. Essentially the law does not give them that authority so the NH DPS has ordered the practice stopped.

North Carolina: A convicted felon is currently facing charges that include possessing a firearm and using it in a criminal act. This only goes to show you that criminals will get their guns even if the law prohibits them from doing so.

North Carolina #2: Shots were fired into a Burger King’s Drive through window during what appears to be a robbery attempt. No one was injured.

Pennsylvania: A Philadelphia robbery victim fatally shot his armed attacker. His attacker matches the description of a suspect in at least two other robberies.

Pennsylvania #2: The city of Clairton has adopted an ordinance that requires owners to report a missing handgun to authorities within 72 hours of it becoming missing. The penalties for violating this ordinance are a $1000 fine and as much as 90 days of jail time. I wonder if there is a provision for someone who goes on vacation for a week and their gun is stolen more than 72 hours before they get back?

Texas: Man who shot an intruder in his home says it is the most difficult decision that somebody can make.

Texas #2: Dallas gun fight during an armed robbery ends in the death of the defender and the arrest of two robbery suspects.

Texas #3: Texas CHL holder and a friend responding to cries for help uses his mini-glock to force man assaulting his girlfriend to stop and holds him for police. After interrupting the assault he called police.

Wisconsin: A new effort to legalize Concealed Carry is a compromise aimed to further restrict other gun rights.

National: Anti-Gun rights activist attempt to use the murder of pro-gun woman to push their agenda. This woman fought for her right to be armed and was recently killed by her husband.

National #2: Bill proposed to force Amtrak to allow passengers to transport firearms in their checked baggage similar to how it is done by airlines.

National/International: Groups in Mexico and the United States are currently pushing to renew the Clinton era Assault Weapons Ban.

International/Canada: Police in Northern Beaches will visit every gun owner at least once in the next four years to ensure that their weapons are properly stored and secured.

This weeks episode is on time, but I had little preparation time and almost no time to edit.  This episode is dedicated to the memory of Gaines County Deputy Robert Alvarado who passed away on  Friday October 9, 2009.  His death was from complications due to multiple illnesses.  Robert was a full time Gaines County Deputy Sheriff, and a volunteer firefighter with the Seminole Texas Fire Department.  I would like to ask all of you to keep his family, friends, and coworkers in your prayers.

Connecticut: An armed citizen shoots dog in effort to protect the animal control officer.

Louisiana: A teacher was robbed at gun point at the Louisiana Technical College. The subject was captured by law enforcement and the gun he was carrying had been stolen a few months prior to the attack.

Michigan: A police officer chooses to do something good for the community and teaches school children about gun safety using NRA materials.

New Hampshire: Prosecutor says teens choose slaying victims at random.

Rhode Island: There have been at least two attempts to abduct people from, or near, the campus of Providence College. Suspects in both cases used different vehicles and appeared to be unarmed. Situational awareness and can help prevent being a victim, now if only law abiding people could be armed on campus as well.

Virginia: A Store owner had to shoot a subject who was part of a gang that had a shotgun pointed at the victim. The store owner had a similar situation about eight months ago where an employee or a customer struggled with an armed robber who discharged their weapon. Using his own handgun the store owner was also able to stop the attack then.

National: Mayor Bloomberg is back at it again.

National #2: While I try not to revisit the going feud between the NRA and New York Mayor Bloomberg’s group This article ties in nicely with the previous one.

National #3: Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison plans to file a brief in support of McDonald in the case of McDonald V. Chicago that is going before the United States Supreme Court.

International: Owning a self loading military assault rifle of any caliber will soon be a hanging offense in Kenya.

News:

Arizona: People with Arizona concealed carry permits, and permits from states that Arizona recognizes can now carry in establishments where alcohol is served in Arizona as long as they don’t drink.

Arkansas: According to the Arkansas Attorney General a ban on concealed carry in churches does not violate the first amendment. The opinion released by the Attorney General does not address the issue of the ban violating the right to arms clause in the Arkansas state constitution nor does it address any second amendment issues.

California: Ammo bill, among others, goes to the governor for signature or veto.

California: A breakdown in the victim selection process has led to the arrest of three suspects who dealt with a victim who had experience in fighting off attackers. The suspects attempted to run the victim over with a vehicle, The victim fired at the vehicle before it rolled over and the suspects fled.

Connecticut: Police say they have apprehended the female bank robber who used the threat of a bomb to commit her crimes.

Florida: A breakdown in the victim selection process leaves one suspect in the hospital and another on the run when they attempted to rob two people. Both victims drew weapons and shot one suspect while the other suspect got away. At least one victim had a concealed carry permit, but both appeared to have the weapons legally.

Kentucky: University of Louisville students concerned about crime on campus. The crimes include sexual assault, petty theft, robbery, and so on. The article links to crime reports for the the university in question and all Kentucky universities.

Maine: Hunter shot on opening day of Duck Season. Folks I can not stress this enough: REMEMBER THE FOUR RULES.

New Jersey: Newark Official’s new policies treat guns as the problem, but take measures against the actual criminals too.

Ohio: Yet another breakdown in the victim selection process results in two suspects being shot by the bar’s owner and a retired police officer.

Texas: Harris County Prosecutors claim expanded gun rights are responsible for increased shootings by Law Enforcement Officers.

Washington: University of Washington Law enforcement is alerting students to multiple robberies on campus. At least one suspect was armed with a knife in one robbery. This story goes on to help prove that we need Concealed Carry on Campus for all states.

West Virginia: West Virginia University police look for witnesses to a campus assault and robbery. This story goes on to prove that situational awareness is the key tool to avoid being a victim of many crimes.

Wisconsin: A Milwaukee gun store is facing political heat from the mayor and police chief and is told they should make changes such as scanning the ID of everyone who walks into the store, force customers to sign an affidavit if they come into the store to buy a gun or use the range. In the end this is over a sign the store owner posted calling the local police department racist.

Wisconsin: A program that allows hunters to donate venison to help feed needy families starts its tenth year. Since the program started hunters have donated enough venison to make about 3.1 million pounds of ground venison.

National News: The Supreme court agrees to take McDonald v. Chicago and hear it during their fall session. Once more Alan Gura is representing our side before the supreme court.

International News:
Canada: Parliament considers dismantling their gun register which we covered two related stories on last weeks show.

Kashmir: A teen girl fought off militants who were attacking her family. She managed to get an axe and attacked the leader with it, then took his AK-47 and killed him with the weapon. Her 19 year old brother also grabbed a militants weapon and fired at them. The issue may have come about as the leader planned to marry the girl and was prepared to do so forcibly. I say give this girl and her brother medals and let them be an example to everyone who is held in fear by armed oppressors.

I apologize for the late show again, but its been a busy weekend.  I am also dead dog tired so this episode is a little shorter than I would like.

Massachusetts: A Boston EMT shoots two friends and then proceeds to administer first aid. The EMT who the article says is “Registered to carry a handgun” has numerous chargers against him including “Carrying a firearm while intoxicated.”

New Jersey: A Person was arrested and one handgun was taken as evidence in Jersey City after police respond to a call of shots fired at Bergen and Lexington Avenues.

North Carolina: Fearing for his life a Pizza Hut employee wrestles a gun away from an armed robber. The suspect took the victim into the bathroom, put the gun against the victim’s leg and then tried to discharge the weapon. The weapon did no fire and a fight for control of it ensued. After loosing control of his weapon the suspect then pleaded with the clerk to return the weapon as it was not his and promised to leave after getting the weapon back. The suspect did flee, however the article does not specify if the victim returned the weapon or if he turned it over to police.

Ohio: A Man was robbed of his pants and was then shot in the back when he turned around to go inside like they ordered. This goes to show that even if you comply with an attackers demands they may still use deadly force on you.

Ohio #2: A 72 year old man shoots an armed robber, and was the target of another robbery attempt. The suspect tried to cut the victim off in traffic twice. When the victim was finally forced to stop the attacker approached him with an AK-47 style weapon and was shot by his victim. The victim of the attack is licensed to carry a weapon legally.

Pennsylvania: five people were injured in three separate shootings. Details are sketchy, as is the article but there is something in there about prisoners.

Texas: A teacher in Tyler was killed by being stabbed to death in a random act of violence by a student. Reports are that the reason for the attack was not gang related or racial in nature.

Texas #2: The Ex-boyfriend and suspected killer of a Channelview woman had at least 25 charges relating to 20 or more arrests and had served time. The woman was killed by repeated stabbings while she lay in her bed. Sadly the night before she was killed she asked her mother to help her go get a restraining order against her attacker. What people do not realize is that protective and restraining orders will not stop an attacker with every intention of doing serious harm. What will stop them is being armed and ready.

Utah: The effort to limit or eliminate non-resident permits gains momentum. This would make it more more difficult for visitors to be armed if they come from states that do not issue permits, or if their permits are not honored by Utah.

Washington DC: so lets get a rock star in the Capital Visitors Center promoting something and they go and plug gun rights, who could this be? If you answered Ted Nugent then you were wrong this time. This time our friendly rock star is Joe Perry of Aerosmith fame.

National: Links between Mayors Against Illegal guns and the Brady Campaign established.  In case you didn’t catch last weeks show I discussed the NRA’s recent assault on Mayor Bloomberg’s group.

Ireland: Using anti-gun logic you would have to assume that with its strict gun laws Ireland is a safe place, but a 15 year old boy is charged with possession of a nine millimeter semi-automatic handgun and five rounds of ammunition. He also faces charges for possessing narcotics for sale or supply also. This only goes to prove that criminals will always find a way to get a gun.

Canada: Toronto Police are going door to door looking for illegal guns based on data from their registry. Any unregistered firearms are seized and either destroyed or held depending on if the owner wants to keep them. The article goes on to say that 1500 guns have been seized this year.

Canada #2: The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are the subject of a potential investigation over them providing information from their gun registry to a pollster to use in a survey. This only goes to show that this, and any other information that the government, or even a company, gets its hands on can be abused.

Open Carry In Texas:
When we start pushing for Open Carry in Texas we need to offer our politicians four options.  While some are not ideal they can let us get our foot in the door:

1. Licensed open carry with separate licenses for open and concealed carry.
2. An open carry endorsement for CHLs.
3. Convert the CHL to a license to carry a handgun openly or concealed.
4. This is our end goal, unlicensed open carry.

In our bill we want at least the following two items:

• Legal open carry.
• legal anywhere concealed carry is currently legal where is no sign prohibiting it and where alcohol is not served for on premises consumption.

Some things we do not want in our open carry bill are:

• Any equivalent of penal code 30.06 signage for open carry.
• Legal Open Carry where alcohol is served for on premises consumption.
• Campus Carry (open or concealed)

Washington: Cleveland Mayor Wants to break the law.
Washington DC: Police search for man in wheel chair who shot a woman in the foot before fleeing.

The NRA-ILA has begun to move against Mayor Bloomberg’s anti-gun rights organization Mayors Against Illegal Guns or MAIG for short.  While the NRA opposes  illegal firearms, MIAG seems to want additional restrictions on law abiding gun owners who have done nothing wrong.

The Taurus Judge is the Rock Star in the line up from Taurus.  The Judge is the handgun that shoots both .410 shot shells and .45 Colt ammunition.  With several different configurations and loads available this handgun can prove itself to be one of the most versatile options available for someone’s self defense needs.

I am hoping to move to a weekly show in the near future.  I am also trying to streamline the show notes so that they look and feel a bit cleaner.  As the show progresses I hope to get things dialed in right where they work the best.  One change you will notice between todays notes and the first show is the lack of long URLs.  Instead I put the link on the state, or federal, bodies name where the story comes from.

Terminology:

Weapon: Click on the word weapon to the left for the webster definition.  To me nothing is a weapon until it is intended to be used to attack or defend someone. Any object, substance, or material can be weaponized, or made into a weapon. Does that mean we are surrounded by weapons? No. It means we are surrounded by potential weapons that can be used to defend or attack us.

Choosing a Carry Gun:

Choosing a carry gun is nothing short of a compromise.  A number of factors can influence your decision however I discuss four factors on the show:
#1: Why do you intend to carry a firearm?
#2: How do you intend to carry your firearm?
#3 Where do you intend to carry the firearm to?
#4: What time of day/year is it?
Remember that what you choose will be a compromise between these factors and others such as state laws, cost or financial issues, ammunition availability, and so on.

Texas CHL law Changes:
SB 1188: This bill, when it goes into effect restores the ability of Texans to legally purchase Firearms, Ammunition, and related materials in any state and not just states that share a border with Texas.

HB 2730: This bill makes a number of changes to Texas Concealed Handgun laws. The first change is eliminating student loans as a disqualifier to getting a CHL. This bill also clarifies that the DPS must revoke or suspend a CHL when the holder becomes ineligible, and that a magistrate must suspend a CHL held by the subject of an emergency protective order.

HB2730 (part 2): This bill provides an interesting change to Texas CHL law by removing the penalty for failing to show license on demand by a law enforcement officer. It also removes the authority of the DPS to suspend a CHL for failing to display.

HB 2664: This bill provides a defense to prosecution should a CHL holder, while armed, enter an establishment that gets 51% or more of its revenue from the sale of alcoholic beverages as determined by the TABC if the business fails to post the proper sign. Currently a CHL holder would be charged with a class A misdemeanor.
